Art and Writing Contest #196 | Returning Home with More Than Memories

in Venezolanos Steem19 days ago (edited)

In front of me, the path extended to infinity but seemed light and easy with every stride. Finally, I was coming back home after being away from the village for five years. In my leather bag, I only had a couple of clothes and some letters that symbolized all those experiences of life that I had been through during my stay in the city. Gold and red colors dominated the evening sky, making me think about the fact that every conclusion is a beginning in disguise.

Walking and walking, I remembered my dear ones and everything we did together. I remembered how every morning my mother used to smile at me before I went to study; how my father taught me many things with his tough hands; how my young sister used to run after me asking hundreds of questions. I left my homeland with an idea of success associated with material prosperity. Life in the city was rich in achievements and failures. I worked hard, met wonderful people, gained important experience, but I also became lonely among lots of people I didn't know.

The outline of the little house became visible above the hills, and my pulse started to beat faster than my steps. The wooden gate was already more worn out, fruit trees had become taller, and the walls bore the signs of seasonal changes. Before I managed to call their names out loud, the front door of the house was open and my mom appeared on the threshold, like as if she didn't want to believe her own eyes. Then, my mother smiled the very smile that I kept in my memories for all the time I've been away. My dad came after her – he was much older now, but his hugs were as warm as I remembered them. My sister, already a grown up woman, embraced me crying and laughing at the same time.

That evening we sat down at our old wooden table and ate an ordinary dinner which turned into the best one compared to any dish I ever enjoyed in the city. Talking about our past years, realized dreams and unfulfilled hopes, I finally found the right answer to the question why people return back to their native places.

Me encantó leerte. Gracias por estar. Un abrazo.
