Artistic space #71 - Photographic Surrealism by Pierpaolo Ferrari
In the publication about the sculptor Cattelan, I mentioned a humorous magazine called Toiletpaper in which the sculptor participates. On this occasion I will talk about the co-founder of this magazine - an Italian photographer who is widely known in the artistic and commercial world for having carried out advertising campaigns for companies such as MTV, Mercedes Benz, Heineken to name a few. I'm talking about none other than Pierpaolo Ferrari - a photographer whose work moves between the surrealist and the commercial. Let's learn something about his life and work. Accompany me on this journey of discovery!

It is common for a photographer to do a job based on his image studio applied to different fields. A very notable example is the large number of documentary photographers who are responsible for capturing facts, activities or circumstances of a particular individual, nature or cultural collective. In the case of Pierpaolo Ferrari, it's a bit complicated since this great photographer has many personal works with touches of surrealism and there is also the work work he has done for commercial firms.

It is difficult to understand how someone can do both things well, especially because most artists literally leave their lives creating a personal seal.

In addition, he is co-founder of the semester magazine Toiletpaper which was created in 2010 and is a magazine without text that shows diverse images where the narrative has several purposes such as bringing the individual to his darkest and most twisted side.

In the magazine, you can appreciate different surrealist techniques that at times evoke the memory of works like those of Buñuel, an explosion of color and scenarios saturated with objects delve into the mind of the individual with themes ranging from the familiar, religious or simply the everyday.

This way of working was striking and creative enough to attract the attention of numerous brands that signed up with the artist to talk about aesthetic issues that are now widely used in product advertisements.
However, the artist prefers to concentrate on his personal creations, leaving some extra time to devote to his photographic creations for the industry.

In this magazine, he works with the sculptor Cattellan with whom he found the way to create a super duo to combine all the creativity that there is in the two minds. Both individuals have surrealist tendencies. Cattelan takes care of the decorations and make-up, while Ferrari takes care of the lighting and the framing. The narrative is created together by the two of them according to previous agreement.

The success of these photographers has been significant all around the world, with interest shown in him by other publishers such as the New York Times who placed their photos in the top 1 % of photo books or the super communication company Vice that has given them space in some publications.

Perhaps the most important commercial work is when they began, in 2013, to work on Kenzo's advertising campaigns. That's when they really achieved popularity and everyone agreed that this Italian photographer was born to take photographs.

The ironic thing is that Ferrari doesn't like working with the industry very much, but it helps him to support himself and to invest in his personal projects. He even created a line of kitchen accessories, flannels, books and even furniture. While often skirting the thin line between art and commerce, Ferrari has always done everything possible to move forward with his personal work and do his utmost not to neglect this in favour of commercial work. In my view, however, all the work he has done, personal and commercial alike, is impeccable.

Whoa!!! This dude's work is awesome! While they are worlds apart, this just reminded me of Thomas Herbrich - https://herbrich.com/ - he does stunning work... actually builds miniature models, photographs 'em, etc... I'm of course fond of my own work- but it's a totally different genre than these dudes. Great post, You've got a new follower.
