A Beautiful Journey and My Experience At My Brother-in-law's Traditional Marriage in Obot Akara

The bride looked so beautiful in her sparkling purple traditional attire with a matching head tie and coral beads, while the groom looked handsome in his white traditional outfit with beads and a beautifully designed cap. They truly looked like a perfect couple.

One thing I noticed about the people of Obot Akara is that they value their culture very much. Before the couple officially became husband and wife, different traditional rites were carried out. The husband gave the wife wine to give her parents, after accepted to him to marry her, she kneeled before her parents and told them that she's bringing the man she intended to marry for them blessed her, the parents accepted annd blessed her. After that the elders from both families gathered together to discuss and bless the union. There was also the symbolic sharing of drinks, prayers, and advice from the family members.

A very interesting part of the ceremony was when the groom and bride were asked to share a drink together and then drop the disposal cups on the floor. Everyone watched with excitement as they smiled and celebrated the moment. After that the master of ceremony prayed that all the necessary rite has been carried out on her head and cast off all evil eyes on them. The crowd applauded loudly, and cameras captured every special moment. It was lovely seeing everyone happy for the couple.

Traditional music filled the air throughout the event. Different cultural dance groups entertained the guests with energetic dance steps while people sprayed money on the dancers. The sound of the drums made many people leave their seats to dance. It was impossible not to smile while watching the colourful display of culture.

The reception area was well organised, the newlywedded cuts the cake and there was plenty of food prepared for the guests. Large coolers and pots containing different local dishes were neatly arranged. I noticed that hospitality is one of the strengths of the Obot Akara people because every guest was warmly welcomed and served generously.

The bride's family gave her household utencils and cooked white soup, accompanied by 5 tubers of yam and a goat for the groom to take home and hand over to the elders of his family when he returns, the goat was moving to and fro walking as guests moved around. It added a village atmosphere that reminded me of how peaceful traditional ceremonies can be.

Before leaving, we took several family photographs with the couple. It was a wonderful opportunity to create beautiful memories together. My children were excited to be part of the celebration, and they enjoyed watching the dancing and meeting new people

We finally left Obot Akara with happy hearts, grateful for the opportunity to witness such a rich cultural event. The journey reminded me that traditional marriage is not just about two people getting married; it is also about bringing two families and communities together in love, respect, and unity.

Indeed, attending this traditional marriage was an unforgettable experience. I learned more about the customs of the Obot Akara people, enjoyed their warm hospitality, and admired how proudly they preserve their cultural heritage. It was truly a day well spent, and I will always cherish the beautiful memories we made together.
