Hello to my wonderful family in the Steem Nigeria community! I hope you all are having a productive and blessed week. Today, I am excited to share another piece of my daily journey as a tailor and fashion designer. Crafting garments is not just my profession; it is a passion that keeps me inspired every single day.
In this post, I will walk you through how I spent my day transforming a unique patterned denim fabric into a stylish, custom-fit combat trouser.
Morning Preparation & Planning
Every great garment starts long before the needle touches the thread. My day began early in the workshop, setting up my cutting table, sharpening my scissors, and organizing my tools.
For this project, I selected a heavy-duty denim material featuring bold typography and graffiti-style print ("NEW YORK / BROOKLYN"). Printed denim like this requires extra attention to detail during the drafting stage because you want the patterns and lettering to align nicely across the seams.
Phase 1: Chalk Drafting & Precision Cutting.
The first major task was chalking out the pattern directly onto the back of the fabric. Precision at this stage is crucial because a single wrong measurement can mess up the drape and fit of the trouser.
As shown in the image above, I laid out the denim fabric smoothly over my cutting table. Using tailors' chalk, I carefully marked out the essential structural lines:
The Waistline & Hip Measurements: Calculating the exact allowance needed for comfort and movement.
The Crotch Curve: Carefully curved to ensure the trousers sit comfortably without binding.
Inseam and Outseam Lines: Defining the overall length and taper of the legs.

Here, you can see me refining the chalk lines along the main body panel. When working on combat/cargo style trousers, you have to account for side pockets, waistband extension, and knee articulation. I spent about two hours carefully drafting, double-checking every measurement with my tape rule before taking the shears to cut out the front and back panels, pocket flaps, and waistband.
Phase 2: Assembly & Sewing Process
Once all pieces were neatly cut out, I moved over to my industrial sewing machine (my trusty Two Lion machine). The construction process involved several structured steps:
- Pocket Construction: Joining the deep front slant pockets and assembling the side cargo pockets with flap closures.
- Fly & Zipper Attachment: Installing a durable metallic zipper and securing the front fly structure with reinforced topstitching.
- Inseam & Outseam Stitching: Joining the front and back panels together using heavy-duty thread designed for denim.
- Waistband & Belt Loops: Stitching the custom waistband, adding sturdy belt loops, and attaching the main button closure.
- Hemming: Finishing the bottom leg openings for a clean, rugged finish.
The Finished Product: The Final Fit
After several hours of intense cutting, gumming, stitching, and pressing, the jeans were ready for a final fit test!

As you can see from the final fitting picture, the combat trousers came out looking fantastic! The baggy, urban fit combines comfort with a modern streetwear aesthetic. The yellow lettering pops vibrantly against the dark denim background, and the fit around the waist and hips turned out exactly as planned.
Conclusion & Reflection
Taking raw fabric and turning it into a wearable piece of art is one of the most fulfilling feelings in the world. It took hours of dedicated hard work, attention to detail, and patience, but seeing the final result makes every second worth it.
