Why Some Students Read and Forget

If you carefully read the topic, you will realize that it is not that the affected students did not read, they do but on getting to the test or examination hall, they find it very difficult to remember all they have read.

Reading in it's simplest definition has to do with connecting your eyes and mind to a printed material or book and it is a very serious business if you really wants to gain something at the end of your reading. Although, reading is subdivided into different types, we have

• intensive reading
• extensive reading
• reading for pleasure
• scanning

To just mention few on the types of reading that we have but the one that concerned students mostly is the intensive type of reading, this is when the student is reading to understand certain concept mostly for examination.

Despite the fact that some students take their time studying intensively, they still get to the test hall and forget what they have read. Reason why may be because they have engages in some reading faults while reading such as;

Eating

Many students when reading will always have something to eat such as popcorn, biscuit and many more. It is a very bad attitude towards reading and will also causes distraction when reading. Just like I said that reading is a serious activities, it requires full attention of the reader and any form of distraction may create problem for the reader.

Listening To Music

This is one of the craziest method of reading some students adopt when reading for certain examination and I don't know how they want their brain to store both the sounds of the music and the information they are sending to the brain. Reading should take place in a silent environment such as Library.

Another bad habit is the use of social media when reading is taking place, this is when the student feels like he/she need to reply to some messages on the social media and finally forget what he/she is reading. To just mention few on some of the reading faults but the major problem many students did not take note about reading has to do with the memory(brain).

Reading involves sending information to the brain for storage and our brain is divided into two memory, we have the short term memory and the long term memory. When reading first take place, the information goes to the short term memory where it is temporarily stored and with constant rehearsal and recalling, the information goes to the long term memory where it is permanently stored for use. When the information in the short term memory is not use for some period of time, it decay and disappear.
