The end of the Watercolour Paint Journey

in ᴀʀᴛ & ᴀʀᴛɪꜱᴛꜱ3 months ago (edited)

For now, this (see below) is the last watercolour painting I have done. I doubt that I have the necessary skills yet. I have noticed that there are many different ways to use watercolour and yes, it is easier to carry around than acrylic paint and there are many different ways to use it.
Some people paint in the old-fashioned way (light colours and no use of white or other types of paint/mediums), while more and more people are using it for their doodles or to paint in thick layers. In the latter case, it may be cheaper than acrylic paint (I haven't really tried that). Painting on canvas with watercolour didn't work for me. I think it's because of the gesso, because watercolour does stain the cloths I use and it doesn't wash out. So painting on canvas with watercolour must be possible.

The portrait below was first sketched in pencil and then I traced the lines with a fineliner. According to the Dutch artist Lineke Lijn, it would not rub off if it got wet.
After tracing the lines with the fineliner, I erased the pencil. Incidentally, I only have Ikea coloured pencils, which are also suitable as watercolour pencils. In practice, I find this very disappointing.
Perhaps a grey watercolour pencil would be better.

Then I coloured everything in with a very cheap box of watercolours (bought years ago at Action?). The paper seems suitable for watercolours, but there is no information on the pad, not even about the thickness. To be honest, I have no idea what this is suitable for.
Of course, the black fineliner did bleed!

Let's say I've at least drawn a portrait.

Because I am absolutely hopeless at sketching, especially in detail, I am going to focus more on that now. I have no idea whether I need to, but who knows, a basic grounding might come in handy, and @aellly is right about that. A pencil is easier to carry around (and cheaper) than a rucksack or suitcase full of painting equipment. So, back to basics.

Now I'm faced with the dilemma of what to draw. It will be something with hair (or fur or feathers). I've since realised that the paper I'm using isn't suitable for this, but I'm going to use it up anyway. It's not for nothing that it's an ugly sketchbook or just something for studies. Those drawings I never used to do because a piece of clay and a camera are one and the same.

I didn't take the time to record all the steps. I just wanted to go to bed early.

Painting: watercolour - some thicker paper (no name on it - Pepco?) - fineliner - HB pencil
Drawings: some ordinary pencil I assume HB since it's the most sold pencil we have.

I like your water color art, one thing with water color the more you play with it the more you get a control on the outcome, for a start you did great 👍just keep practicing. I have used water color to paint before but professionally I wouldn’t use that for serious projects, there are good professional water color artist out there though. Acrylic paint is good but it tends to dry faster, I mostly make use of oil paint because it gives me ample time to go in between layers.

This was one of my old water color painting, This was like my first ever attempt on water color.
It was done on a sketch pad paper

I like your painting, but this is exactly what I mean.. it's used in a way we would like acrylic painting. I always wonder what people mean by that acrylic paint dries too fast. It doesn't with me. There are times it's still wet the next day (oil paint takes weeks). I assume the reason is the cold and low temp.
Thanks for sharing this.
For now I like to practice with pen (but the ink seems to have a hard time to flow) .

Then that mean you wet your canvas with water i guess, but regardless oil paint is my favour it’s paint, would love to see more of your works. Same here i practice by posting sketches but most real work I do are in oil paintings.

I only wet those spots I will use the paint on. I tried to wet the entire paper but that doesn't seem to work out. Can be me, the wrong paper, the wrong paint or a combination.
I tried on canvas, which should be possible but for that is a different type of "gesso" is needed, and I don't like to buy that. Still, I do believe it must be possible to paint on canvas (or linen or cotton) since the paint remains in the cloths I use to dry the brushes. For sure I will try that, but for now I rather improve my sketching.
I tried watercolour painting for about 4 weeks and I like to do something else and fill out my "ugly" sketchbook with something else (plenty of books I can use for sketch books LOL).

I still cannot make the ink run, very annoying. In between I will sketch with a pencil and not use a raiser.

I really love the fact that you are trying out every method, this is how you tend to find a medium that suits you perfectly. Improving on your sketch will help you a lot, sketching is one of the first step to a successful drawing. I also think there will be a watercolor base paper out there that can help but finding it is another thing.

What type of pen do you use?? have you tried using hot water to heat the ink tube in the pen?

I do not know what's going on with watercolors and contours that blur like carcasses from tears, but maybe you can apply contours with a thin brush using the watercolor itself?
I don't understand anything about this technique, but the idea seems to work for me.
The pencil drawing is great. I don't have the words :)

I agree, if the light has a color, then the skin catches reflexes. By the way, this is an interesting approach. This is similar to the results of inversion in photo processing. I'll think about it.

Your pencil drawing impressed me, to be honest. Don't tell me this is the first time you've picked up a pencil.

Congratulations!

turn-off

You are a great artist. Are you selling on etsy?

No, I don't sell. I save or give away.

(. Incidentally, I only have Ikea coloured pencils) Wow, IKEA, we agree that this place is very nice

I have that cup too.. You know the one with the milkcoffee (I knew you would respond).. and my desk, chair, and more is from Ikea but it won't last long and the mattresses are bad.

hahaha ,With that reference, I prefer not to buy anything.I'll keep buying coffee. As for the food, it's lacking something, I mean, it lacks flavor, so I'll keep buying coffee and the occasional cake. The mashed potatoes are good, I have to admit.

It's true. That Swedish food, if it's Swedish at all tastes very strange and it lacks a lot. The only thing I once liked was a certain chocolate pie, but they only once sold it. The other one is yuck.... Those small cakes covered with green (fake?) marzipan aren't great either. I like the Dutch ones way more.

The exercise was interesting in itself. It answers the question of what colour skin is. Now, skin colour does not exist; when certain light hits it, you can literally see all kinds of colours, just like with a soap bubble. Thank you for your kind words. When are you going to draw the mountains?

I always wonder how artists deal with those initial pencil sketch lines. I see some who paint right over them, while others make them disappear entirely.
