New Bazaar Fish Market

Location & Accessibility

New Bazaar Fish Market is one of the traditional fish markets in our small town. There is an area called Puratan Bazaar (Old market), where a temporary market still takes place twice a week. The new fish market is located right next to the vegetable market in the main town, making it easy to find.

Although the market isn’t very large, quite a number of fish sellers operate here every day. You can reach the market either on foot or by small local vehicles. It’s located in a central area, so finding it is no problem at all.

There are many grocery stores around the fish market, and right after passing it, you’ll find the meat section and, on the left side, the vegetable market. This means when you come to buy fish, you can also buy meat, groceries, and vegetables in one place, making your shopping more convenient and time-saving.

Opening and closing Hours

This fish market in New Bazaar remains open every day. Traders usually arrive early in the morning, and buying and selling start around 8 a.m. If you visit at that time, you’ll find the freshest catch of the day.

By evening, most sellers leave, and only a few remain with limited stock. The exact closing time isn’t fixed, but after 8 or 9 p.m., you won’t find any fish left. So, if you want good options, it’s best to visit in the early morning or early evening.

Structure of the Market

The market has quite a few fish vendors sitting side by side. I have never seen any quarrels among them, they seem quite cooperative. Some sellers have permanent tin-roofed stalls, where they sit every day regardless of the weather. Rain doesn’t affect their business.

Others sell fish along the roadside, outside the roofed area. These vendors are more affected by the weather during rain, they cover their stalls with plastic sheets. Despite the open setup, their fish remain fresh and well-preserved.

Variety & Freshness of Fish

In this local fish market, you can find pond fish, river fish, and even a few sea fish. Sea fish are limited, but pond and river fish are widely available. Fish come here from different parts of the country since our area doesn’t have any large river nearby.

The fish here are generally fresh. Some sellers are long-time traders who have been selling to my father for years, and we still prefer buying from them. They always try to provide the best and freshest fish possible.

Cleanliness & Hygiene

The fish market is quite clean. There’s a water tank nearby that’s regularly filled using a motor. Sellers use this water to wash the area frequently so that no bad smell or blood stains remain. The constant water supply helps keep the place neat and hygienic.

Quality & Pricing

You’ll find good-quality fish in New Bazaar Fish Market. Many experienced traders here focus on selling quality products. So we feel comfort while purchasing fish here.

Hilsa fish stored on ice since they are brought from distant areas

Fish brought from distant places are preserved with enough ice. Our national fish, the hilsa, arrives from faraway regions and is always stored properly with ice to maintain freshness.

Other pond fish like rohu, catla, and chital are usually very fresh and sold daily. The prices are quite reasonable. If you bargain politely, you can often get a small discount. For your reference, here are a few sample prices I noticed during my visit.

Service & Staff Attidue

The sellers here are known for their friendly service. They treat their customers with respect and try to maintain good relationships. The vendors we usually buy from know our family well. They often give us small discounts or even sell on credit when needed.

There are also helpers in the market who clean and cut the fish after you buy it, so you can take it home ready to cook. This makes shopping much more convenient.

Overall Value & Recommendation

This fish market is an important place for our community, providing a wide range of fish to meet local demand. It supports many people’s livelihoods from fish farmers to traders.

The waste management system here is quite good, and the pathways are usually clean. Overall, my experience was very positive.

For these reasons, I highly recommend buying fish from New Bazaar Fish Market. It’s a great spot for fresh, quality fish and a pleasant local shopping experience.
