Kattencafé 'Het Visje' - Cat Café Zutphen

Guess where I was!
The cat café ‘Het Visje’ in Zutphen. It was the first time in my life I’d been to a cat café. I usually just walk past them, because I see there are many cats sitting behind the window and I have my doubts about how clean it is in there. This time I was the only customer; a lady arrived after me and mentioned that she was allergic to cats.

Good news for anyone with a cat allergy: you hardly notice them in this café. It’s spotlessly clean, you can’t miss that, the furniture isn’t caked in cat hair, and there aren’t any tufts of cat hair on the floor either.

This building used to house a Subway, and that’s the sort of coffee that isn’t particularly appealing in the Netherlands, or even regarded as proper coffee.

If you want to go inside, you’ll need to wait for a moment behind a closed connecting door until it’s unlocked. This is to keep the cats inside.
The owner and staff aren’t paid; it’s voluntary work and staff are expected to work at least four hours a week.

On the menu, alongside the various cats, eight in total, are the usual coffee, tea and soft drinks, as well as simple lunch, porridge biscuits and some cakes; these cakes, incidentally, are made by the owner and a friend. They taste excellent, the café operates in an environmentally conscious manner and vegetarian options are also available.

A tip is appreciated, as the cats naturally need care, food and litter too.

The café’s interior is modern and spacious; it is certainly accessible to wheelchair users. It smells good inside.
There is also a particularly clean toilet available for visitors.

Opening hours are limited and the café closes at 5.00 pm.

Positive is if you want to stay a bit longer, you certainly won’t be kicked ou; the staff are exceptionally friendly, even though there are two new members of staff, one of whom is on their first day and the other on their second.

And if you like art you can have a look at the watercolour paintings made by Jaap Leenstra, of cats, which are right above the counter.

The entry is free so is the use of the bathroom.
Not more than three children allowed and it is asked to keep your voice doen. Feeding,bullying the cats and aggressive behaviour upon them is not accepted.
