Educating Cancer Patients and Appreciating Healthcare Heroes at My Hospital
Greetings of the day,
This is @alfazmalek from #India,
Hello friends,
Good evening friends. Today was one of those meaningful days that reminded me why I chose the healthcare profession. Every day inside a cancer hospital teaches something new about humanity, patience, pain, and hope. Like my usual routine, I woke up early in the morning and got ready for hospital duty. The atmosphere in the early morning always feels calm, but somewhere inside I already know that many responsibilities are waiting for me at the hospital. After reaching the hospital, I attended our morning meeting where we discussed departmental updates, patient care, infection prevention activities, and ongoing hospital responsibilities. These meetings are very important because they help every department stay connected and organized. Once the meeting was completed, I started my regular rounds in different areas of the hospital.
During my rounds, I spent time meeting several patients and their relatives who had come for cancer treatment. Every patient carries a different story, and every family comes with fear, hope, confusion, and emotional pressure. Some patients were receiving chemotherapy, some were waiting for investigations, while others were discussing treatment plans with doctors. Looking at them, I suddenly felt that many people still do not fully understand cancer and infection prevention. I thought that instead of only observing the situation, why not use this opportunity to educate them in a simple and understandable way. So I gathered patients’ relatives and attendants in the waiting area and started a small awareness session.

I first explained about oral cancer because it is one of the most common cancers seen in our country. I spoke about the harmful effects of tobacco, smoking, and gutka consumption. Many people quietly listened because they had personally seen family members suffering due to these habits. I explained the early signs of oral cancer such as mouth ulcers that do not heal, white patches inside the mouth, difficulty swallowing, and unexplained bleeding. After that, I also educated them about GI cancer and blood cancer in simple language so that even non-medical people could understand easily. I tried my best to avoid complex medical terminology because awareness becomes meaningful only when people understand it comfortably. Some relatives were taking the discussion very seriously and asking genuine questions about prevention, symptoms, and treatment support.
While discussing cancer awareness, many people also started asking me questions related to infection prevention. Since cancer patients often have low immunity, infection prevention becomes extremely important for them. I explained how small precautions can protect vulnerable patients from dangerous infections. I taught them the importance of proper hand hygiene, wearing masks in crowded areas, maintaining personal cleanliness, and avoiding unnecessary exposure to infections. I also explained why hospital visitors should avoid visiting patients when they have cough, fever, or any contagious illness. Some attendants were surprised to know that even simple handwashing can reduce infection risks significantly. Seeing their interest made me feel satisfied because awareness is one of the strongest tools in healthcare.
One thing I always notice in cancer hospitals is that treatment is not only physical but also emotional. Families become mentally exhausted while caring for patients, and healthcare workers also experience emotional stress daily. Working in a cancer hospital is not easy because every day we see pain, fear, and uncertainty very closely. This is why motivation inside healthcare teams becomes extremely important. In the evening, we organized a small Reward and Recognition programme in the hospital for our hardworking staff members. The purpose of this programme was not only to distribute awards but also to appreciate the dedication and emotional strength of healthcare workers who continuously support cancer patients.
The atmosphere of the evening programme felt positive and refreshing. Different staff members gathered together after completing their duties, and for some time the environment became lighter and happier. We appreciated nurses, support staff, technicians, and other team members who had shown dedication toward patient care and teamwork. Some employees looked genuinely emotional while receiving appreciation because healthcare professionals often work silently without expecting recognition. I personally believe that appreciation can become a powerful form of motivation. When healthcare workers feel respected and valued, they perform their duties with even greater positivity and energy.
During the programme, I also shared a few words about mental wellness and teamwork. I reminded everyone that working in a cancer hospital requires not only professional skills but also emotional resilience. Every healthcare worker carries stress internally because dealing with critical illness every day can affect the mind deeply. That is why creating moments of encouragement and happiness inside the workplace is extremely important. Even a small appreciation can reduce emotional pressure and help staff feel mentally refreshed. Watching my colleagues smile during the programme gave me personal happiness because their hard work truly deserves recognition.
As I returned home at night, I felt physically tired but mentally peaceful. Today was not just another hospital duty day. It became a day filled with awareness, education, motivation, and emotional connection. From educating families about cancer and infection prevention to appreciating healthcare staff for their silent dedication, every moment carried meaning. Days like these remind me that healthcare is not only about medicines and treatments. It is also about humanity, communication, compassion, and giving people emotional strength during difficult times.
