But today I'll touch on something I haven't talked about before because I assumed many already know. But I shouldn't be making assumptions about knowledge in agriculture.

People usually want to start a pepper business because there is a high demand in the town. Especially being in Ghana and if you're also in Nigeria or any country where the common native delicacies involve a lot of pepper, there's more demand.

In the local market, traders are competing to get the best pepper every day. A really common mistake is thinking that starting a crop business takes little money.

Oh Goldyy, isn't it just about setting up the soil and getting the good seeds and water and some manure? Nope.

Setting up a modern farm requires buying a thick plastic cover for the soil. This cover eliminates weeds and protects the farm during heavy rains. This cover needs to be bought in bulk if you want it cheaper and to work on more peppera and that alone takes a large part of the starting money.

Labor costs also take a huge part of the starting budget and this usually comes as a surprise to the first timers.

There is a lot of work to be done to prepare the farm and you will need to hire workers to help you with the cover.

Controlling these costs will determine if the business will be profitable or not. If the first month of farming business is spent buying covers using all the starting capital, then it is guaranteed that there will be no money before the first harvest. There needs to be a budget set for hidden costs, otherwise, there will be a lot of debt and low yields. You may not see it if at the beginning but you'll definitely know after you're done selling that you run at a loss.

Success in the farming business is achieved by balancing the costs of the covers and ensuring there is a steady stream of cash for the labor costs too.
