How Covering the Soil Helps Plants

When I look closely at this farm and the crops, I really felt bad for them. They must really struggle on days like this. When the sun is shining brightly, the soil's moisture quickly evaporates, and not only that, but the ground can get hard as a rock.

Plant roots must work so hard to search for moisture and when they do find some, all of their energy goes towards just trying to survive as opposed to growing. This type of plastic can be laid down in farm rows and it can stop a lot of problems for the farmer. By blocking the sun from heating up the sand, the water that is in the ground can not go up as it would normally do.

When the water does try to go up it touches the plastic and then falls back down to the root area of the cropd and thanks to that, the soil remains soft and wet for long periods of time and the crops are able to get a constant supply of water to drink.

Then there is also the problem of weeds to deal with. These wild bushes grow up really fast in order to reach the sunlight. But since the dark plastic blocks the light, the weed seeds that are lying in the ground are not stimulated to grow. In this way your main crops are not hindered by weeds that are growing in between the rows of crops and are even eating from the same soil as your crops.

The crops are really doing very well since they have plenty of energy for growth instead of fighting for survival. The stems are growing long and strong, the leaves are wide and green and the roots are cool and wet with plenty of water.

I'll be looking into more things other than mulching to keep the farm doing well.
