Simple Moss growing on wet pavement
Those greenish spots I'm showing you was on the pavement next to one of the buildings nearby. It's no surprise this is there because we're currently in the wet season. It's called and rains any day anytime, multiple times
What you're looking at are mosses. They do not have roots or seeds but have learned to thrive on concrete surfaces. This is possible because concrete can retain moisture, which gives everything moss needs to develop. It extracts water and nutrients directly from the leaves and uses the small amount of soil deposited in the cracks as mineral sources. Some shade and dampness can help them even further and that pavement has good shad above. That part that's not too green is a bit outside the shade so you can tell the difference.
Their attachment to the surface does not require roots. These plants use filaments, which firmly cling to the ground. But firmly is relative because I can easily clear them off, I just want to stufy them for some time first before.
Mosses do not damage concrete and will not cause cracks in the pavement so it's not a problem leaving it there for a short time to study.
It is important to deal with them for other reasons though. The problem with moss on a walkway is the dangerous situation it creates when it is wet. People can easily slip on such an area, which may lead to injuries. This is the main threat moss brings either than the appearance of the place. Although up close it makes the area look like some vast grass land or some Avatar Pandora realm to me.
Like I mentioned, removing it is quite simple. I wouldn't want to touch with my hands but ohysical efforts are enough to remove it, but there are some special chemicals which are even more effective. But both will not give you long term results, and the plants will return unless there are no suitable conditions anymore. Some shade and dampness can do their job and it will take some time.
You don't need to see it as being interesting like I do but at least now you understand what it really is.
