This plant can be used to test soil nutrient levels for free: Plant Photography
Good day to all steemians and everyone reading today's blog. I planned on doing a little plant photography and show a few things about the plants we see as common.
Today's plant is called the Spiny Amaranth. There's different types of Amaranth species and they're plants the herbivore livestock live to eat, but this one is more like the black sheep of the family. It's the one the livestock avoids because of the spiny parts.
You can technically see it as a pest if you're into farming, and it's because of its ability to take nutrients from the soil. But that very nature to gives you the farmer an advantage. This plant actually has the ability to provide some very vital information about its growing conditions which you can use for something important on your land.
If your soil is rich in nutrients, and specifically rich in nitrogen, the Spiny Amaranth will thrive. Seeing these ones grow so fast and so healthy is enough proof to me that the land they're on is very rich in nutrients.
You'll see the Spiny Amaranth grow so well with there rich, deep green stems and healthy leaves. But if your soil was nitrogen deficient, the Spiny Amaranth would have a stunted growth and leave that are yellowing. You don't need to test the soil with crops you bought, these plants that you can't eat will do the job and you can then clear them off the land, prepare the land and start growing your crops. The Spiny Amaranth can detect the conditions of your soil without a lab test or your need to soil test, it is a free soil test mother nature is giving to all farmers.
If you intend to use your land for farming, please don't angrily rip them from the land because you may be ripping out valuable information. A lot of people don't soil test and they're just not aware of their soil’s growing conditions.
The most important thing is to not just wait. If Spiny Amaranth begins to flower, it will go to seed and take over the area. Take the soil tests, note the conditions in the soil, and pull the Spiny Amaranth.
