Why Pepper Plants Produce Multiple Times

Most of the common crop plants we know of, produce fruit once, and then they die off.

Because of that nature of the plants, the typiccal farmer or basically all farmers would need to till the land and replant just to be able to harvest the crops again. One of the reasons I like dealing with peppers so much is because they're the opposite of what I just said.

Peppers grow as a perennial shrub instead of a seasonal annual plant. The pepper fruits themselves are harvested in season, but the pepper plants live for multiple years. If you have a well established pepper plant, it develops a strong root system which will support the heavy peppers for several seasons. So because of that, when the pepper crops are picked from the branches the plants do not die, like the other crops like maize case. What the plant does instead is it the directs the water and soil nutrients into a whole new bud growth.

And thanks to this nature of theirs, the same pepper plants can be harvested multiple times over many months. Each time plants are harvested they will grow new bud, and the older the root system gets the better it will be able to hold up to the weight of the heavy crops.

If you are going to plant peppers and you want success during each harvest time, you need to use fertilizer regularly because they are continually taking heavy nutrients from the soil.

A perennial crop like pepper basically makes tropical farming much more of a long term investment than the common seasonal annual crops.
