Incredible India Monthly Contest of July#2: Skills or Degree!
Hi friends, welcome to my blog, it feel so good to have you here. I would love to share my thoughts about this subject and I really do hope you find it interesting. Let's get right into the gist.
Skills vs Degree! According to you, which one is more significant(pick one) and why?
I really do not feel comfortable picking one of these, but I think I've just been boxed with the question above. I believe the two are very important but if you would have me pick just one then I would go for skill and the reason is not far fetched, just stay with me.
I would go for skill because I believe acquiring a skill is a more narrowed down, intentional and concentrated kind of learning which could be both formal or informal. Now, my definition might not be generic, I'm using what is operative here in this part of the world to pass my judgement.
Many of the people who have a degree in a particular discipline in this part of the world are not really skilled or good at what they have obtained a degree for and that's because so many area of studies where jumbled up to make up their discipline which include borrowed unrelated course which to me is considered a distraction.
A skilled person does not focus on too many things and you can be sure that he can deliver on a job he didn't go and get a degree for. As a matter of fact, many of these folks acquire these skills from some "unauthorised" quarters and are doing wonderfully well. They do less theories and are more practical. They justify their knowledge by what they do and not just what they know.
How do both influence our lifestyle? Explain!
Now this is where I have to strike a balance. Both are very important and significant and of course influence our lifestyle. I would like to put it like this, a skilled person should strive to obtain a degree in a recognised institution of learning this gives him an edge among other skilled folks like himself who might not have obtained a degree.
Not only will this distinguish him in his craft, it would also expose him. Don't forget I said someone who goes for a degree would be exposed to some unrelated disciplines along the way, these are not totally a waste when you look at it from the big picture.
Such a fellow can be taught interpersonal communication & relationship which he might not have learnt while he was all out to just get a skill. Such a person would also be exposed to the business side of the skill he has because it's not enough to just acquire a lucrative skill, one should ask "do I really know how to maximize this skill profitably"?
Going for a degree can also go a long way in helping you present your skill, I mean market your skill such that it makes your skill more profitable for you.
And to those who have only decided to go for a degree, I would say adding a skill to your wealth of knowledge would be of a very greater advantage to you.
To sustain in life, which one helps us more, skills or degree? Your viewpoint!
Both is capable of sustaining you but then it still boils down to one important question, what can you do, skill is the answer to what you can do, degree can furnish you with knowledge, a vast one at that but the proof that you have these knowledge is to show what you can achieve with it.
Sadly, there are so many people who have obtained a degree in a discipline they know next to nothing about and then after so many futile efforts they end up going the route of skill, which answers the question "what can you do".
The earlier you understand that we now live in a world where whoever wants to partner with you or even bring you opportunity or offer you employment, would ask what you can do, how can you add value to what is on ground. This further stresses the need for skill. So I would say skill helps more when it comes to sustainability.

You have beautifully explained both sides of this topic. I think skills and degrees are not opposites. But rather mutually reinforcing paths. Degree helps us to broaden our knowledge and thinking. While skills teach us to apply our knowledge in practical life. In today’s era just having a degree is not enough. A person should also have some special ability and work skills. A person who improves his skills along with education has more chances of success. I really liked your point that the real recognition comes from what we can do practically. Very good and informative article with excellent ideas.

Muy cierto todo una cosa no le resta nada a la otra, se pueden estar en las dos al mismo tiempo si lo tienen, porque no todas las personas son habilidosas teniendo un titulo, pero si hay quienes tienen el titulo y tienen muchas habilidades
