Il calore del traffico innalza le temperature delle città. / Heat from traffic raises temperatures in cities. [ITA/ENG]
I ricercatori dell'Università di Manchester hanno trovato un sistema per rappresentare il calore prodotto dal traffico nelle città all'interno del CESM (Community Earth System Model), un modello climatico all'avanguardia.
Il loro lavoro permette di prevedere come diverse tipologie e quantità di veicoli possono innalzare le temperature nelle città e influenzare il modo in cui il calore circola tra le strade e tra gli edifici.
Gli scienziati hanno usato dati reali sul traffico cittadino di Manchester.
Il modello è talmente preciso da consentire di considerare anche i diversi tipi di veicoli - a benzina, diesel, ibridi, elettrici -.
Decimi di grado che fanno la differenza, questi valori sembrano minimi, ma durante le ondate di calore in città, possono fare una differenza importante, perché spingono le temperature percepite sopra le soglie di sicurezza per lunghi periodi.
Inoltre, il calore rilasciato dalle auto a livello della strada può essere trasferito agli edifici, e rendere necessario aumentare il ricorso all'aria condizionata.

Researchers at the University of Manchester have found a way to represent the heat produced by traffic in cities within the state-of-the-art Community Earth System Model (CESM).
Their work allows them to predict how different types and quantities of vehicles can raise temperatures in cities and influence the way heat circulates between streets and buildings.
The model is so precise that it can even take into account different types of vehicles - petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric -.
Tenths of a degree that make a difference, these values seem minimal, but during heat waves in cities, they can make a significant difference, because they push the perceived temperatures above safety thresholds for long periods.
Furthermore, heat released by cars at street level can be transferred to buildings, necessitating increased use of air conditioning.
