A Curve Worth Remembering – Monte da Guia, Faial Island

Some roads are built to shorten distances.

Others exist to remind us why we travel in the first place.

This photograph was taken along the road that circles Monte da Guia, one of the most iconic viewpoints on Faial Island in the Azores. It isn't a long road, nor is it particularly busy, but every curve reveals another perspective of the Atlantic that makes you want to stop the car once again.

That is exactly what happened to me.

As I reached this bend, the landscape seemed perfectly balanced. The winding road embraced the coastline, the volcanic rocks framed the foreground, and, across the sea, Pico Island quietly dominated the horizon beneath a sky filled with ever-changing clouds.

There was no dramatic event.

No spectacular wave.

No rare wildlife.

Only a peaceful afternoon where everything seemed to be exactly where it belonged.

Moments like these remind me that photography isn't always about capturing extraordinary places. Sometimes it's about recognizing the beauty hidden inside ordinary moments—places that hundreds of people drive past every day without stopping.

The Monte da Guia has long been one of my favourite places on Faial.

Whether you visit at sunrise, during the bright afternoon, or just before sunset, the landscape never looks quite the same. The Atlantic, the clouds and the light are constantly rewriting the scenery.

Perhaps that's why I keep returning.

Not because I expect the same photograph...

...but because I know I'll never find it again.

🌊 About Monte da Guia

Monte da Guia is an extinct volcanic cone located just south of Horta. Besides offering breathtaking panoramic views over Faial, Pico Island and the Atlantic Ocean, it also overlooks Porto Pim Bay—one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the Azores.

Its scenic road has become a favourite route for photographers, hikers and anyone looking for a quiet place to appreciate the changing moods of the ocean.

📷 Behind the Lens

Rather than focusing solely on the sea, I wanted the winding road to become part of the story. It naturally guides the viewer's eye through the frame before leading it toward Pico Island in the distance. Waiting for the clouds to create texture above the horizon gave the photograph the atmosphere I was hoping for.
