Every coastline has its landmarks.

Some are built by human hands.

Others have stood in the same place long before the first footsteps ever reached the shore.

This solitary volcanic rock immediately caught my attention. Rising from the calm water like the bow of an ancient ship, it seemed completely unaffected by the gentle waves surrounding it.

It wasn't the largest element in the landscape.

It wasn't the brightest.

Yet it became impossible to ignore.

The sea moved.

The clouds drifted.

People enjoyed the beach in the distance.

But the rock remained exactly where it had always been.

Watching this scene made me think about resilience.

In life, we often admire movement—progress, speed, constant change. Yet some of the strongest things we encounter are those that simply endure.

They don't compete.

They don't seek attention.

They just remain.

Volcanic islands are born from extraordinary forces, but over time those dramatic beginnings give way to peaceful landscapes like this one. The lava cools, the waves soften its edges, vegetation returns, and life quietly settles around it.

Perhaps resilience works in much the same way.

Strength isn't always loud.

Sometimes it's the quiet determination to stay standing while everything else continues to flow around you.

That single rock, shaped by centuries of wind, salt, and tides, tells a story without saying a word.

And somehow...

...that's enough.

The dark volcanic rocks scattered across the bay are reminders of the Azores' volcanic origins. Formed by ancient eruptions and slowly sculpted by the Atlantic, they transform a peaceful beach into a landscape where geology and time become visible.
