Hi guys, accept warm Steem greetings from the motherland of Cameroon, and welcome to my blog, where I'm gonna share my thoughts on the challenge topic “Movies that challenge society”.

Before I go into the write-up proper, permit me to invite some friends, @suboohi, @max-pro, and @solaymann, to participate in the challenge.

That said, the movie I watched was a Cameroonian film titled “Hidden Dreams”, produced in 2021 by Nchini Justin and directed by Ngang Romanus.

The movie is about a gifted young girl who dreams of pursuing higher education despite obstacles rooted in gender bias, economic hardship, and family expectations. The movie portrays the resilience of a young Cameroonian girl striving for self-determination confronting gender stereotypes.

Set in a context where tradition strongly influences life choices, the film portrays how education, career goals, and independence can clash with the pressure to marry early and conform to prescribed gender roles.

What social issue did the movie highlight?

Hidden Dreams primarily highlights gender inequality and societal pressure on women, especially the expectation that a woman’s main purpose is marriage and family life.

The movie focuses on how young women are often denied the freedom to choose their own paths be it in education, career, or personal relationships because of deeply rooted cultural norms.

It shows how families and communities can impose strict timelines for marriage and judge women who prioritise independence or self-development.

More broadly, it raises the issue of individual freedom versus traditional expectations, questioning whether cultural norms should limit personal ambition. By doing this, the movie brings attention to the need for greater autonomy and equal opportunities for women in Cameroonian society.

Did it change how you see this issue?

Watching HiddenDreamschanged my perspective on gender inequality by making it feel real and immediate rather than theoretical. Before, I understood that unequal expectations existed, but the film showed how deeply they shape everyday decisions especially for women expected to prioritise marriage over personal ambition.

The movie also made me reflect on how cultural norms can quietly enforce inequality. What stood out was not just the pressure from society, but how it came from family, community, and even internal beliefs. It made me question how many opportunities are lost because people feel obligated to conform. I began to see that gender inequality is not always obvious or aggressive. Sometimes it is embedded in traditions that go unquestioned.

Ultimately, the movie pushed me to think more critically about the balance between respecting culture and supporting individual freedom. It showed me that challenging harmful norms does not mean rejecting culture entirely.

How is this theme discussed this week relevant today?

The theme “Movies that challenge society”remains highly relevant today, as reflected in the movie Hidden Dreams because across many cultures, including in Cameroon, traditional expectations around gender roles still influence how people live their lives, often limiting women’s opportunities and choices. A movie like Hidden Dreams brings these issues into the open, encouraging conversations that might otherwise be avoided. By showing the personal impact of societal pressure, such movies help audiences question whether long-held norms still serve a positive purpose in a rapidly changing world.

In today’s society, where education, globalisation, and social media are reshaping values, stories that challenge inequality are especially important. Hidden Dreams highlights the tension between tradition and modern aspirations, a struggle many young people continue to face. By addressing themes like gender inequality and personal freedom, the movie not only reflects current realities but also pushes for progress, reminding viewers that culture is not static and can evolve to become more inclusive and fair.
