Fruit seeds do not produce the same fruit
Sometimes, I say, “Don’t put a fruit seed in the ground and expect it to grow exactly that fruit".
It's a common misconception. There's a cartoon I watched when I was little, they played a song with this lyrics
"plant a seed inside the earth, just one way to know its worth "
That's very true but not precisely how it's done.
It won’t grow that fruit they way you have imagined it.
A friend of mine got surprised and asked “why not?”
The reason is a simple one, it's because if you spit out a seed from an apple and plant it in the ground, you’ll end up with something quite different.”
I know, I didn't explain I basically told you what nature has designed.
Bees and the wind carry pollen from one flower to the next, mixing things around. So no seed is just like its mother or father. It’s more like a new baby which is unique.
You’ll also have to wait a long time for the tree to grow up and bear fruit. And when it does, the apples will probably be too small or not the same texture or precise taste.
So on a commercial scale, how do they grow the same Mangoes, apples and all these fruits we see that a similar in size to be sold at a similar price without someone saying, he or she just got cheated?
On commercial, the farmer wants every Mango or apple to be just like every other mango or apple. So they take a cutting from a good apple tree, then grafts that cutting onto the roots of another.
The graft heals and grows, making an exact copy of the original tree. They can plant thousands of these, all with the same desirable traits, which makes their work much simpler. They know what kind of crop they'll get,
But there's a problem, they're all basically clones of the original one they took from. Which means they’re all vulnerable to the same diseases, insects and environmental changes.
The wild trees aren’t clones. They have new gene combinations, giving them a better chance of adapting to changing conditions.
That's why they have to be extra careful with grafted ones and also choose the healthiest ones because if it's from a healthy one, that also means the benefits are shared with all the new clone trees.
