Personal flight is already a reality.




And there are competitions dedicated to showcasing it.


Flying using only a body-mounted suit once seemed like an idea confined to science fiction movies, yet this technology has actually existed for some time. In the United Kingdom, Gravity Industries developed a system capable of lifting a person using micro-jet turbines mounted on the arms and back—eliminating the need for wings, propellers, or even a handheld controller—resulting in one of the boldest projects in modern personal aviation.


The greatest challenge was never generating enough power to lift a pilot off the ground; the real issue always lay in control. For decades, various projects failed because they relied on heavy structures or complex stabilization systems. The solution Gravity devised was strikingly different: it turns the human body itself into the aircraft's control system.


The Jet Suit utilizes five micro-turbines that collectively generate over 1,000 horsepower. Two engines are mounted on each arm, while a fifth is positioned on the back, distributing thrust in a balanced manner. Powered by aviation kerosene or diesel, these turbines spin at extremely high RPMs, generating enough force to lift an adult into the air; however, the equipment is truly piloted by the user's own body.


Slight arm movements alter the turbines' thrust vector, enabling the pilot to accelerate, brake, or change direction almost intuitively. The pilot's center of gravity remains below the force generated by the engines, creating natural stability akin to the behavior of an inverted pendulum.


In practice, muscles replace traditional movable control surfaces and flight computers. The technology has moved beyond mere demonstration; the Jet Suit has been tested in rescue operations in mountainous regions, where teams can reach victims much faster than by land. Furthermore, Gravity Industries has created the world's first jet suit racing league, transforming this innovation into a new form of competitive sport.


The Jet Suit demonstrates that personal aviation is entering a new phase. Instead of placing people inside a machine, engineering is transforming the pilot into an integral part of the aircraft, bringing a long-held science fiction dream closer to reality.
