Robotics comes to clothing




Clothing capable of practically putting itself on the wearer


Putting on clothes seems like one of the simplest daily tasks, but for millions of older adults, people with disabilities, or professionals who need to quickly don protective gear, the process can pose a huge challenge. Now, researchers from South Korea and Stanford University have developed technology that looks like something out of science fiction: clothing capable of practically putting itself on the wearer.


The system uses small, flexible, vine-like structures embedded in the fabric itself; when subjected to air pressure, they gradually extend, pulling the garment along the body while turning it inside out during the process. Instead of pushing the entire structure forward, the robot grows only from its tip, continuously adapting its path to the person's shape. This allows it to navigate curves, pass through narrow spaces, and keep moving even when the surface presents varying levels of friction; as a result, the wearer can continue walking or performing other activities while the clothing automatically puts itself on.


Another key advantage is that the system virtually eliminates the need for complex control algorithms.


The mechanical design itself handles much of the work; thanks to the natural behavior of these pneumatic structures, the garment conforms to the body without relying on sophisticated calculations for every movement, thereby reducing equipment complexity and increasing reliability. Researchers believe the first applications could emerge in settings ranging from hospitals and semiconductor cleanrooms to emergency response, where the ability to quickly don protective gear can make all the difference.


Furthermore, the technology could offer significantly greater independence to older adults and individuals with limited mobility, enabling them to perform daily activities without relying on the assistance of others.
