Humanoid robot with wheels on its legs

The Unitree Robotics G1 human robot appeared sliding on wheels, in a few seconds it executes 360º turns, maintains balance and one leg and even completes front somersaults with quite impressive precision, but the real impact is not in the acrobatics, it is in what this reveals about the future of robotic mobility.

The Chinese company Unitree Robotics is betting on a powerful idea, uniting two technologies that for many years followed separate paths, on the one hand, fast, efficient and economical wheels, on the other, slower articulated legs, but capable of climbing stairs, crossing difficult terrain and avoiding obstacles.

G1 combines both systems in the same body, when the environment favors speed, it rolls, when it requires adaptation, it walks, it seems simple, but it is not. This touches on one of the biggest challenges of modern robotics, wheeled robberies tend to excel in perfect factories and floors, but fail in the face of the unforeseeable.

Robots with legs are versatile, but they consume more energy and require extremely complex controls. When these two capabilities come together, a new category of machine emerges, faster, more efficient, more subtle in the real world and perhaps exactly what large companies are waiting for. Imagine logistics centers where robots cross voids at high speed, climb stairs, avoid forgotten boxes on the floor and continue operating without pause, or rescue machines entering dangerous places after fires, earthquakes or collapses, where humans would have enormous difficulties.

But there is an even greater detail and almost no one has noticed it, this demonstration is also a leap in artificial intelligence, to maintain balance at high speed, calculate movements in real time and react to unpredictable surfaces, the robot needs to interpret the environment continuously, mechanical force is not enough, instantaneous decision is required.

Unitree Robotics itself has already presented the G1D version aimed at data collection, training and real tasks, a clear sign that these robots are not being created just to impress cameras, they are being trained to work and when the robots stop impressing in videos and start generating productivity, the entire market pays attention.
