The first robot dog in a mine.

When we think of mining, we usually picture giant trucks, excavators, and workers facing heat, dust, and high-risk environments; however, a transformation is underway in the sector. At a copper mine in Utah, USA, "Spot"—a quadruped robot from Boston Dynamics—has evolved from a mere inspection machine into an integral part of the operation's "brain."

Instead of simply walking around the site, it continuously collects data, feeds an artificial intelligence system, and assists mine managers in making decisions. The project is led by Mariana Minerals, a company that defines itself as the world's first mining firm built on a "Software First" philosophy, where data is just as important as the extracted ore itself.

Each patrol conducted by the robot is part of a larger system called Mariana Oest, a platform that aggregates information from sensors distributed throughout the mine. It analyzes this data in real time and helps operators optimize every stage of production. Within the mine, Spot navigates inspection routes completely autonomously; during these rounds, its cameras and sensors capture images, temperature readings, sound data, and other information regarding the refinery's equipment, piping, and structures.

Instead of relying on manual inspections performed only a few times a day, the mine is now continuously monitored, allowing anomalies to be identified long before they escalate into equipment failures or accidents. Safety is another key benefit; many inspections require workers to enter potentially hazardous areas near heavy machinery or industrial structures.

With Spot performing these rounds automatically, human exposure is significantly reduced while inspection frequency increases, resulting in an operation that is both safer and more efficient. This involves the deployment of the robot for the Cooper One project, introduced by Mariana Minerals as the first mine driven entirely by autonomy and software.

The company’s goal is not merely to automate individual machines but to connect the entire production chain using artificial intelligence, transforming a traditional operation into a system capable of continuously analyzing its own performance and adjusting processes with minimal human intervention.

Sorry for my Ingles, it's not my main language. The images were taken from the sources used or were created with artificial intelligence
