The Diary Game:Attending The New Yam Celebration Of A Popular Deity In My Community(IWALU-ANA NNEWI - JI FESTIVAL 2026).30TH JULY,2026.
So guys today I'm going on a new festival which is being hold by a popular deity called (Isi Ana Nnewi) which is known for protecting and restoration of peace in nnewi. The deity must eat the new yam before the king does read my diary well i will tell you why is like that in my community.
WHY THE DEITY EATS NEW YAM BEFORE THE KING
Iwalu Ana Nnewi Ji: Why the Primordial Power of the Land Must Eat the New Yam First Before the King
In the ancient kingdom of Nnewi, there is a strict cultural hierarchy that nothing can change. Before any human being, chief, or even the reigning King can taste a single slice of the new yam harvest, a sacred ceremony called "Iwalu Ana Nnewi Ji" must take place. This historic ritual happened yesterday on the significant day of Afo Okwu, marking the official spiritual opening of the harvest season for the entire town.
Ana Nnewi is the primordial earth deity and the supreme spiritual foundation of Nnewi land. Her sacred shrine, the Okwu Ana Nnewi, sits as the absolute power point of the community. According to Nnewi tradition, eating the new yam before this deity receives her first share is considered a massive spiritual abomination that could bring misfortune upon the farms and the people. Only after Ana Nnewi is fed can the King and the other major deity, Edo Nnewi, follow to celebrate their own New Yam and Afiaolu festivals.
This year's ceremony carried an extraordinary amount of spiritual weight because of the unique status of the Chief Priest, Chief J. Udoye (the Isi Ana Nnewi). He did not just show up to officiate as a regular priest. Instead, he stepped into the sacred grounds as a fully titled Onye Nze
To prepare for this heavy spiritual responsibility, Chief Udoye had just completed the grueling Akwu Ozo ritual. This required him to stay in total isolation for twenty-eight days to undergo deep spiritual purification and commune with the ancestors. Emerging from this strict month-long confinement, he took on four heavy, historic Ozo title names that reflect his elevated spiritual power: Eze Anakwe, Eze Onyemandidiegwu, Eze Omaonweyaonwenatuegwu, and Eze Onyetueobiowuludike.
Officiating under his prime title, Eze Anakwe, the Chief Priest used his newly acquired spiritual authority to break the new yams, pour libations, and pray for the protection, prosperity, and peace of all Nnewi sons and daughters worldwide. By performing this ancient duty, he successfully cleansed the land, making the new yam safe for every household to harvest, cook, and enjoy.
Our cultural heritage is truly deep and beautiful! Now that Ana Nnewi has blessed the harvest, the gates of abundance are officially open.
How does your own community celebrate the first day of the new yam? Drop the name of your hometown in the comments and let’s discuss our beautiful Igbo traditions!.
Many traditional masquerade were displayed accustomed by traditional music
This is one the masquerade that attended the ceremony I'm not really familiar with the name of this particular one.

We call this one cow masquerade because of it's appearance and how it behaves .
And so many other ones that also attended each with a different traditional song and dancing steps it was truly memorable i wish my fellow steemians were there to witness it.
