Diary Game: [18/06/26] Between NEPA and Sleep

I didn’t plan to write tonight. NEPA took light around 7pm and my phone was on 14%. So I sat by the window and watched the whole street go dark except for generator sounds and people’s phone flashlights. Someone down the street was playing old Fuji music and a few kids were chasing each other with glow sticks. Nothing special, but for once there was no traffic noise, no notifications, just people actually seeing each other. I ended up talking to Mama Nkechi who sells akara by the junction. She told me about how she met her husband in 1998 during a blackout too. We laughed. I stayed longer than I meant to.

Later I remembered I hadn’t eaten since noon. I opened the fridge and it was basically empty except for bread, eggs, and half a bottle of Coke. So I made what my roommate calls “broke student omelette” - bread torn into pieces, 2 eggs, onions, and whatever seasoning I could find. Tasted better than it should have. Ate it cold because lighting the stove felt like too much effort. While eating I started counting the number of times I’ve said “I’ll start gym next Monday” this year. Got to 17 before I lost count and felt attacked by my own brain.

Taking a big rest

Around 10pm the light came back for exactly 12 minutes. Enough time for my phone to jump to 18%, for me to panic-charge, and for Instagram to remind me that everyone else’s life is perfect. I saw a post of someone’s vacation in Calabar and felt that weird mix of happiness for them and guilt for not doing anything “productive” today. Then light went off again. Phone back to 18%. I think the universe was telling me to log off.

So here I am, writing with torchlight and 15% battery. Today wasn’t productive. I didn’t tick any boxes. But I had a real conversation, I ate food I made myself, and I watched my neighborhood exist without electricity. Maybe that’s enough. Not every day has to be a highlight reel. Some days are just for sitting still and letting life happen quietly. I’ll take those too.
