Diary Game :[30/04/26] Thursday Cleanup In My School

My phone rang 7:02am. It was the owner of the secondary school I am teaching. "Sir, Please kindly come to school today. Mummy Charley put to bed , no cleaner on ground Just a little cleaning to brush up the school." I read it twice. I planned to visit a friend of mine today but these changed my plan. By 9am, I was at the gate with Mr Emeka, Mrs Adebayo,Mrs Afolabi, Mrs Ismail, Mrs Taiye, and Corper Joy. It was just us no students. No student to shout "Good morning sir." Just us, with brooms, mops and buckets. The proprietress said we can start immediately.

Everyone took their various classes. No student means no noise but also no help. I opened a locker and dust greeted me massively. Desks were arranged with dusts on them But the floors were filled with torn paper, biscuit wrapper from last term. We didn't touch anything academic. All we did was sweep, clean, and mop the floors. Sweep with short broom, pack with dustpan, mop with water.

By 11am my back and legs were shaking.
Mrs Joy fine face had sweat all over it.
We were passing bucket like those relay race.

The thing that was paining me was the silence. No "good morning" , no students running, no bell. Just we the adults, dragging mop, hearing our own echo from the empty classes .

At 12am, we sat on SS1 steps to drink pure water.
We just looked at the compound we swept.
It looked decent and unique.
We were already finished.

After everything, principal brought us cold Maltina. We sat in staff room, no talk. My arms were shaking. I reached home 2pm and slept till 4pm. The cleanup was not a joke. Our cleaner, Mummy Charley has been really trying she deserves more. When she comes back we would do a Thanksgiving for her. Because these floors can't mop themselves.
