Slcs31w5- My taste my culture; Home and Heritage.
Before we begin, I want to sincerely appreciate the Steemit team once again for this amazing opportunity. Thank you for building a platform where culture, creativity, and everyday life can be shared through food.
Welcome to Week 5 of this exciting journey: “My Taste, My Culture” (Expressing Culture Through Taste).
🎉 What is this week about? — Home & Heritage (Family Meals and Cultural Transmission).
In the previous weeks, we explored identity, heritage, cultural diversity, festive celebrations, and even street food culture.
This week, we go deeper into our homes.
👉 The meals we grew up with. The recipes whispered from one generation to another. The food that carries our family stories.
Family meals are more than just nourishment. They represent:
- Love passed through cooking
- Traditions preserved across generations
- Cultural identity shaped at home
- Stories, memories, and shared experiences
These are the foods we enjoy:
- At our family tables
- During childhood memories
- In moments of togetherness
- Through traditions taught by our parents and elders
They are not just recipes—they are our inheritance.
🍲 My Heritage Dish
for this week
I present a meal that reflects my deep family roots and cultural identity:
👉 Abacha (African Salad)
Abacha is made from dried shredded cassava, soaked and mixed with palm oil, potash, spices, ugba (oil bean), and other local ingredients like fish, kpomo, and garden eggs, onions, pepper and etc.
It is often enjoyed with:
- Palm wine
- Pepper sauce
- Ugba (oil bean)
- Fish or meat
In my family, Abacha represents:
- Heritage – A dish passed down through generations
- Identity – A strong connection to our cultural roots
- Family bonding – Often prepared and shared together
- Tradition – A recipe preserved through time.
A little family background story
On growing up, we eat Abacha almost every Saturday evening. It was like an appetizer before the main dinner dish. Dad loved Abacha so much that mum will always make it. It became a family tradition and something we loved and looked forward to every weekend.
Mum taught me how to make Abacha. I could remember vividly my excitement working alongside mum, preping all the ingredients we used to make Abacha. The excitement on our faces as we all get a plate of this cherished family heritage and meal.
I grew up loving to eat Abacha and and I still prepare and eat it even though I am far away from home but each time, it’s a beautiful reminder of the memories, heritage and togetherness we shared growing up.
👉 To me, Abach is not just food — it is a family legacy on a plate.

🎯 Final Thoughts
This week is about where it all begins—home. The meals we inherit are more than food; they are stories, memories, and identity passed from one generation to another.
Through this challenge, we celebrate the hands that taught us, the traditions that shaped us, and the cultures we carry forward. I can’t wait to see the beautiful family stories behind your dishes.

Saludos.
