Hello, wonderful Steemians in this community; it's me again, and in today’s post, I’ll be sharing the creative process behind my pencil portrait of the iconic Salvador Dalí. Known for his bold personality and surreal artistic vision, Dalí’s face alone tells a story—and I wanted to bring that story to life through my pencil. Here is a step-by-step tutorial on how I created this piece.

Drawing materials

• A4 paper

• mechanical pencil

• graphite pencils: 2B, 4B, and 6B

• charcoal pencil

• black pen

• eraser

• sharpener

Step 1

This is the starting step; I started with the eyes because they carry the expression of the portrait. Using slightly darker strokes, I built up the eyelids, pupils, and subtle shadows around them. From there, I shaped the nose, keeping everything balanced and natural.

Step 2

Next I drew his mustache and shaded his face. I used gradual layering to build tones instead of pressing too hard at once.

Step 3

For the hair, I didn’t try to draw every strand individually. Instead, I focused on shading the mass and flow, using darker tones to define its volume. This approach helped me maintain a clean and structured look while still achieving realism.

Step 4

Here I added his clothing, which he is wearing, and drew his shoulder. I shaded the necessary part and added contrast in the neck area.

Step 5

Then finally, I kept stepping back to observe the drawing as a whole. This helped me spot areas that needed adjustment, whether in proportion, shading, or contrast. It’s a habit I’ve developed over time, and it always improves the final outcome. Below is my final result.

In conclusion, this portrait of Salvador Dalí was both a challenge and a rewarding experience. It allowed me to explore deeper shading techniques while capturing the essence of a truly unique individual. I’m proud of how it turned out, and I look forward to improving even more in my future works. Thank you all for your continuous support and encouragement; I really appreciate it.
