Today I have chosen a club for senior citizens. The name of the club is Farashganj Sporting Club. It is a very old club. According to many, it is the first recognized club in Bangladesh. Today I will visit the club and set a pin on the Steem-Atlas map.

Farashganj Sporting Club is the name of a traditional sporting club in the country. It was established in 1959 by some energetic and enthusiastic young people of the area. This club was established with the financial support of the then Sardar of Old Dhaka, the late Maula Baksh.

Farashganj Sporting Club began its journey there by participating in various important sports, including football, hockey, cricket, table tennis, handball, and chess. Farashganj Sporting Club is located in the old part of Dhaka, between the historic sites Ruplal House and Northbrook Hall. The place is known to everyone as Lalkuthi Farashganj Sporting Club. Next to the club is the historic naval port, and next to it is the historic Shyambazar.

These two famous structures are on the Buriganga River. It is said that the capital, Dhaka, originated around the Buriganga River. The historic Buriganga, Dhaka Naval Port, Shyambazar, and Farashganj Sporting Club have given the place a unique dimension.
The address of Farashganj Sporting Club is 1/1 Farashganj Road, Lalkuthi, Dhaka-1100. The location to get here is very easy, just say the name of this club to any transport, or even say the name of Shyambazar or Dhaka Naval Ghat, and you can easily get here. There are many types of transport to get here, rickshaws, autos, CNG buses, etc. There are also private cars. Whoever has the easiest means of transport can get here.

The main building of Farashganj Sporting Club has been damaged a lot over time; it is being renovated and made functional while keeping the original structure intact. That is why the club's activities are currently closed here. Work is also being done inside the club; the entrance is closed. However, the club premises can be entered. It is open to everyone.

As soon as you enter the club premises, the club's signboard is visible on the left wall. There is a beautiful seating arrangement made of marble stone in the middle of the premises. The seating arrangement has been arranged with a beautiful design, a curved, round seating arrangement made of marble stone, and in the middle, there is a water fountain, which has created a wonderful atmosphere. 15-20 people can sit near this fountain and enjoy.

By standing here, the main building of Farashganj Sporting Club can be seen. The beautifully crafted building is made of red bricks. It is decorated with an unusual design. There is a beautiful lawn to walk around the building. Due to this, the visitors coming here can explore the entire place. Although the club is not busy, it has gained the status of a tourist place due to its beautiful environment.

That is why the people of the busiest city come here every day to spend their free time. They enjoy the beauty of this place. Parents come here with their small children. Friends come here with swings, lovers, and couples like to spend their valuable time in this beautiful environment. I have even seen several administrative people enjoying the beautiful environment here.

Both ends of the club are quite open, and marble stone stairs have been installed. Visitors enjoy the beauty of the club and its surroundings while sitting here.

Every door of the club reminds me of the past. Once upon a time, old houses were built with such an aesthetic design that the beautiful craftsmanship on the red bricks takes you back to that past.

What kind of people bring this space to life, and is there an iconic figure associated with it?

The Farashganj Sporting Club premises are a gathering place for all kinds of people. The place is open to everyone, including young boys, girls, young men, and old people. When I visited, I saw people from all walks of life coming; they were visiting the beautifully crafted club in their own way, sitting on the marble stairs and discussing among themselves. Many were doing photo sessions to capture their memories of the club's beauty. The moments were very joyful.

Young generation comes here to enjoy the place

The memories of several people are particularly associated with the famous Farashganj Sporting Club. One of them is the influential Sardar of that time, the late Maula Baksh, who, seeing the interest of the youth of that time, allowed the club to be built on his land. He also provided a lot of financial support for the formation of this club.

The second person who helped this club move forward was the former Honorable Chairman of the then Municipality, the late Mr. Moinuddin Chowdhury. He also provided a lot of help on his own behalf. As a testament to their contribution to the creation of this club, their names are still written inside the club.

All kinds of visitors gather here

I mainly come here with the role of a silent spectator. I have observed this place several times, and each time I have been defeated by its beauty. I am amazed by the craftsmanship of the builder of this building. There is no plaster, just red paint on the bricks to create such a wonderful design that you cannot believe it without seeing it. I observe every staircase, window, and ceiling but do not make any sound. As if I were a silent spectator, countless compliments rush to the building builder in my mind.

What is your most special childhood or teenage memory tied to this place? Or an anecdote from your time there?

I do not have any special memories of my childhood or adolescence with this place. I found this place a year ago. At first, I thought it was a club to visit. That was my mistake. Later, when I came here, I was amazed by its beauty. After that, I came to see this form twice more. Each time it felt like a new one to me. And each time I saw a gathering of different classes of people here.

In one word or a short phrase, how would you define the spirit of this place?

Can such a wonderful environment, such a functional building, and its extraordinary form be expressed in one word or a phrase? Sentence after sentence can be written about such a memorable place, and then the writing does not end. Then, if I had to define its vitality in one phrase, I would say its “Timeless vitality.”
