Taking photos with great enthusiasm

Independence Day is celebrated with great fanfare every year in countries across the globe. In our beloved Indonesia, the celebration is about far more than just flag-raising ceremonies, parades, or other formal events. As soon as August arrives, a wide array of festive activities begins to take place in various locations; indeed, community traditions often kick off a full week before the actual Independence Day. State Senior High School 5 (SMA Negeri 5) Lhokseumawe is one such venue for these celebrations.

Every year, independence-themed competitions are organized for students, teachers, and administrative staff alike, fostering a sense of togetherness and joy within the school community. With the arrival of August, government buildings and public facilities are adorned with flags and red-and-white decorations. Similarly, at the school where I teach, the gates and fences are decorated with the national red-and-white colors. Displaying these symbols indirectly cultivates a spirit of nationalism among students and citizens alike.

The competition participants are competing with enthusiasm

In an effort to instill a sense of nationalism across all levels of society, this spirit of unity and celebration is expressed through various competitions. These activities have become a tradition that has endured from the dawn of independence in 1945 to the present day. A variety of contests serve as a platform for the school community to celebrate independence, including those held at SMA Negeri 5 Lhokseumawe.

Over the course of two days (Friday and Saturday) leading up to August 17, 2026, the school through the Student Council (OSIS) will organize a range of competitions. These events are diverse and adaptable to preferences while upholding the traditions of this annual celebration. The lineup includes activities such as volleyball, a ball-and-pipe relay, a water-plate relay, and a patriotic song lyric relay. All these competitions help foster the discipline and teamwork that are essential to the spirit of struggle.

Festive atmosphere on the field

Winners of each competition receive their prizes on Indonesian Independence Day, serving as a token of appreciation for their contributions to the commemorative celebrations. These competitions take place throughout August, particularly in the lead-up to August 17th each year. The tradition instills important values within the community and the younger generation, fostering a spirit of mutual cooperation and solidarity among residents; during this time, people gather, assist one another, and work together to ensure the events' success.

Differences in age, individual ability, or background do not prevent people from participating and sharing in the joy. The festive atmosphere of the competitions offers a simple yet effective way to strengthen social bonds and maintain unity within the community. Moreover, the tradition instills a spirit of sportsmanship, determination, and perseverance qualities exemplified by the nation's heroes.

Participants also learn to accept victory with humility and defeat with grace. Ultimately, these annual August competitions commemorating Indonesian Independence Day serve as an expression of nationalism, honoring the struggles of the nation's heroes and giving meaning to independence through togetherness, joy, and a shared drive to move forward toward the future and realize the nation's aspirations.

It was wonderful to see this Independence Day celebration at SMA Negeri 5 Lhokseumawe. The month of August really creates a kind of national festival atmosphere in our subcontinent and neighboring countries, and that image is beautifully captured in your writing and pictures. I think that just reading books is not enough to spread the basic spirit of patriotism or independence among students. The team mentality and empathy that is created among the youth through competitions like volleyball or various relay races will help them a lot in their future. The lesson of accepting the pain of defeat and sharing the joy of victory through sports is really great. The description you have given of this joyful atmosphere as a teacher gives a clear idea of the entire event. Thank you for sharing it. Best wishes to you in this contest. 😊
