A day in our apple orchard

Most people living in the rural areas of Kashmir depend on apple farming for their livelihood. Their income and daily lives are closely connected to these orchards. While apple orchards look beautiful, growing apples is far from easy. It requires dedication, patience, and months of hard work.

Now that I’ve grown up, I’ve taken on the responsibility of looking after our family orchard. Because of that, I truly understand how much effort goes into producing a good apple crop. Our work begins with the arrival of spring and continues until the first snowfall of winter.

One of the biggest challenges in apple farming is protecting the trees from diseases. Apple trees are highly vulnerable to fungal infections, especially apple scab. That’s why spraying fungicides at the right time is essential. We have a complete spraying setup for this purpose. In this video, I’ve tried to show you our spray pump and the water container we use. Once the pump is started, the spraying process begins.

But spraying is only one part of the job. Before that, we have to arrange water. Most orchards here depend on natural sources of irrigation, and many times we have to bring water from distant places. This is another major challenge that comes with maintaining an apple orchard.

When you look at the amount of hard work that goes into growing these apples, they are truly priceless to us. Unfortunately, if apple prices fall at the end of the season, it results in a huge loss. It’s not just a financial loss—it’s also the loss of an entire year’s physical effort, time, and dedication that every farmer has invested.
