A Snowy Drive Through Kashmir – Life in Winter
Kashmir is located in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent. The Kashmir Valley is surrounded by magnificent mountain ranges, including the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range. Being a high-altitude region, the valley has an average elevation of around 1,500 to 2,000 metres above sea level. Because of its elevation, Kashmir enjoys a temperate climate with four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
Unlike many other places, summers in Kashmir are generally pleasant and not excessively hot. Winters, however, can be harsh. Heavy snowfall is common, and temperatures often fall below freezing, especially during the peak winter months. As snow blankets the valley, daily life becomes much more challenging.
Snowfall affects almost every aspect of life. Many routine activities come to a standstill, transportation becomes difficult, and countless people are unable to earn their daily livelihood because roads become slippery or blocked. Even short journeys require extra caution, and driving on snow-covered roads demands patience, skill, and slow speeds.
The government remains well prepared during winter, with snow-clearance teams and emergency services working to minimize disruptions. Even so, nature presents challenges that cannot always be avoided, and people must adapt to the harsh conditions.
In this video, I wanted to show you what it’s like to drive on a snowy day in Kashmir. At the time of filming, fresh snow had started falling, although it had not yet accumulated heavily on the roads. My friend and I were driving through the snowfall, and you can clearly see how carefully and slowly vehicles must move on snow-covered roads. The quiet roads, the falling snow, and the surrounding landscape give a glimpse of both the beauty and the challenges of winter in Kashmir.
While snow transforms the valley into a breathtaking winter wonderland, it also creates risks for everyone. Roads become slippery, visibility is reduced, and travelling becomes more demanding. Through this short video, I hope you can get an idea of the realities of life here during the snowy season.
Despite all these challenges, winter has its own unique charm. I believe that life’s difficulties make us stronger, and they also make the beautiful moments more meaningful. These changing seasons are what make life in Kashmir so vibrant and memorable.
The video quality is not perfect because it was filmed from inside the car, and the windshield already had some dirt and moisture on it, making the footage less clear. Nevertheless, I wanted to share this experience with you. I recorded this video a few years ago during winter, hoping to give you a small glimpse into what a snowy drive in Kashmir truly feels like.
I hope you enjoy watching it.
