My pencil portrait drawing of a young lady
Hello Steemians!
I hope everyone is doing great today. Today, I am excited to share another pencil portrait drawing that I recently completed. As an artist, I always find joy in creating portraits because they allow me to study facial features, emotions, lighting, and the beauty of human expressions. In this artwork, I drew a young lady with a calm and thoughtful appearance, focusing on soft shading and realistic details to bring the portrait to life. In this post, I will walk you through my creative process and the steps I followed to bring this portrait to life using my pencils.
Materials needed
• A4 paper
• mechanical pencil
• graphite pencil
• charcoal pencil
• black pen
• eraser
• blending tissue
• sharpener
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1
First, I began developing the facial features. I started with the eyes since they are usually the most expressive part of a portrait. After that, I worked on the nose and lips, gradually adding light shading to create depth and form.
Step 2
The hair was next. The hair was one of the most enjoyable sections of this artwork. Using a combination of 4B and 6B pencils, I strengthened the darkest sections while preserving lighter areas for highlights. This method helped create volume and made the hair appear more realistic.
Step 3
With the face and hair completed, I then moved over to the shoulder and neck. Using my 2B and 4B pencils, I gradually shaded the neck.
Step 4
Next I worked on the clothing; I used soft shading techniques to suggest folds and fabric texture without distracting attention from the face. Then, to make the portrait stand out, I added a soft graphite background behind the subject. This simple technique increased the contrast and gave the artwork a cleaner and more professional finish.
Step 5
After several times of adjustment and adding little details, the portrait was finally complete. Below is my finished work.
