Am so happy🤗 that my young sister helped me in the kitchen today, My sister (Onyinye) who is just 10 years old, was excited to join me while I prepared our meal, watching Onyinye take part in the kitchen reminded me that children can learn valuable life skills when they are given simple and safe responsibilities, She listened carefully to instructions, worked with respect and was proud to see the delicious meal we prepared together, It was a wonderful opportunity to teach her about teamwork, responsibility and the importance of helping at home.

🍛 STEPS ON : HOW MY SISTER AND I PREPARED RICE AND BEANS JOLLOF

Step 1

My sister and I brought together all the ingredients that we need, we made sure that we put on the charcoal so that we can use it to cook the delicious meal.

Step 2

We picked out any dirt from the beans, washed them thoroughly with clean water, then we added a little quantity of water in the pot, allowed it to boil a little before adding the beans into the pot, we boiled them until they became soft, then
used filter to filter the beans from the water and kept them aside.

Step 3

After that we washed the rice several times with clean water to remove excess starch and drained it, then we added 3 cups of water into the put and put it on the fire, after we have noticed that the water has boiled then we added the rice in to the put, closed the put and allowed it to boil, after some time we filtered it with our filter so that the rice would not become soft, and then we kept it aside.

We made sure that we added enough water to cook the rice and beans and tasted it if anything is lacking, because I believe that tasting a food when cooking is part of making sure the food is well cooked.

Step 9

When the rice and beans became soft and the water dried, our delicious Rice and Beans Jollof was ready, we brought it down from the fire and allowed it to get cooled then my sister proudly helped serve the food and we enjoyed eating the tasty meal we prepared together.

Preparing Rice and Beans Jollof with my sister was a fun and memorable experience which i will never forget on earth, thanks @suboohi once again because if you didn't organize this amazing kid's in the kitchen engagement contest we won't have cooked together, we worked together as a team, learned new cooking skills and enjoyed the satisfaction of making a delicious homemade meal together.

What's your opinion about kids to help in cooking?

In my opinion, involving children in cooking is one of the best ways to teach them important life skills from an early age, The kitchen is not just a place where meals are prepared; it is also a place where children learn responsibility, patience, teamwork, and creativity. When kids help wash vegetables, measure ingredients, stir food under supervision, or set the table, they begin to understand that preparing a meal requires effort and care. These experiences help them become more confident and independent as they grow.

IMG_20260801_183344_516.jpg

Even though my mum doesn't allow my younger once to go into the kitchen everytime but
i strongly believe that encouraging kids to help in the kitchen is a wonderful investment in their future, The lessons they learn while cooking go far beyond preparing food they build confidence, responsibility, disciplineand valuable life skills that will benefit them for years to come, and kids has a very active brain in remembering something so anything we teach them while in the kitchen will always remain with them.

What Precautions should be made when kids are in kitchen with you?

Having kids help in the kitchen is a wonderful way to teach them valuable life skills, but their safety should always come first. Before cooking begins, children should wash their hands thoroughly and wear clean clothes or an apron. Long hair should be tied back, and they should avoid loose clothing that could catch on hot surfaces or utensils. It is also important to explain the kitchen rules before they start helping.
IMG_20260801_183129_818.jpg

Children should only be given tasks that match their age and ability. Younger kids can wash vegetables, mix ingredients, or arrange food, while adults should handle sharp knives, hot pots, boiling water, and frying. Dangerous items such as matches, lighters, and electrical appliances should be kept out of their reach. Adults should always supervise children closely and never leave them alone in the kitchen.

For me allowing kids to help in the kitchen can be both fun and educational when proper precautions are taken, With good supervision, clear instructions and age appropriate tasks, children can enjoy cooking safely while learning responsibility, teamwork, and healthy eating habits. Safety should always be the first ingredient in every meal. 🍳👨‍🍳👩‍🍳
