It is always a pleasure to share my latest tailored creations with fellow fashion enthusiasts and artisans. Today, I want to take you through the story behind my latest project, a bold, vintage-inspired short-sleeve shirt featuring an energetic, running horse print.
As always, all images and processes shared in this post are original captures straight from my workshop floor.
The Attraction: Falling for the Vintage Horse Print 🐎
Every great piece starts with a spark. While browsing through fabric options, this specific vintage material instantly caught my eye. The bold graphic depiction of running horses, blending deep shades of chestnut brown, golden amber, silver grey, and stark white, radiated raw energy, freedom, and classic retro style.
I knew right away that a loud, artistic print like this shouldn't be over-complicated with excessive pockets or busy cuts. It needed to be transformed into a clean, modern resort-style casual shirt where the fabric itself takes center stage.
The Crafting Processes:
Bringing a statement print to life requires careful handling so the artwork aligns smoothly across the body.
- Cutting & Pattern Alignment: Because the horse illustrations are large and dynamic, I spent extra time positioning the pattern blocks before cutting. I wanted to ensure that key elements of the print flowed naturally across the chest and back without getting awkwardly bisected at the seams.
- Weaving & Edge Finishing (Overlocking):
To give the garment a clean, durable internal structure, I took the raw cut panels to the overlocking machine. Weaving the raw edges with a four-thread overlock stitch prevents fraying, keeping the inside as pristine as the outside.
- Assembly & Stitching:
Sitting at my straight-stitch machine, I brought the panels together, joining the shoulders, setting the comfortable short sleeves, and finishing the collar and plackets with precise topstitching.
The Result & Community Question!
As you can see from the fitting photos, the shirt turned out vibrant, relaxed, and full of character!
Now, I need a little advice from the fashion experts in the Hindwhale Community:
