morning
First, I woke up at 5:30 AM; after washing my face and freshening up, I headed toward the kitchen—where the staff members were busy chopping vegetables in preparation for cooking. This was a task I had been entrusted with—a duty I was fulfilling for a 15-day period as part of my hostel residency, alongside my studies. We provided them with the appropriate quantities of vegetables and spices. Next, I moved over to the fish-cutting area to oversee various matters—such as determining the number of fish pieces to be cut, specifying the required size, and settling the fish bill.
The morning workload was substantial, as three different dishes were being prepared for the hostel residents: a potato and bottle gourd curry for the general boarders, ghugni (curried peas) for the vegetarians, and fish curry for the non-vegetarians. I remained in the cooking area throughout the entire process to assist the staff with supplies; once the cooking was complete, I rang the bell to signal that it was time to eat. Subsequently, I served food to everyone, one by one.
afternoon
That morning, after finishing all my chores, three others and I sat down to tally up exactly how much had been spent and where. We then compiled a list to help us keep track of everything. We did not go out shopping at all today.
Later, as the afternoon gave way to evening, I headed back to the kitchen area. Quite often, I had to cover shifts—sometimes both morning and evening—due to the absence of other staff members. Since the hostel provides only breakfast and dinner, I assisted the kitchen staff with the cooking—specifically by organizing and handing out the necessary ingredients from the storeroom. I had absolutely no opportunity to rest throughout the entire afternoon, as I was extremely busy due to the sheer volume of work.
night
Later in the evening, I have various duties involving the distribution of keys; then, at 8:30 PM, we return to the storeroom, where I mark each egg by writing the corresponding number of the boarder or resident student on it. Subsequently, at 9:00 PM, we ring the bell once again to signal that food is being served, and as everyone arrives, we serve them their meals one by one. Finally, after finishing our own dinners, the four of us gather together again at 10:30 PM to verify how many residents have paid their monthly food bills, to note whether they have opted for vegetarian or non-vegetarian meals, and to calculate the total amount collected. In this way, we collected the meal money for a total of 137 people. We then wrap up our remaining tasks by placing an order for fish for the following morning, based on the number of meals required. Thus, I spent a rather busy day from start to finish.
