Morning at the Market

These three pictures were taken by me. No professional camera, no planning, no special lighting. Just me my phone and a regular morning at the market.

I didn't even thought about the photography when I was about leaving the house. I just needed some few things from the market. But immediately i stepped into the market something told me to start capturing what I was seeing.

The first thing that stopped me was that tomato stall.

I almost walked straight past it. But the colours just hit me deep red tomatoes piled up yellow and orange peppers heaped beside them garlic and onions tucked in between. All of it sitting on a rough wooden table like it was nothing special. But it was very special to me. I waited for a while before I reached out to my phone for a good shot. The person in charge of the stall had clearly been there since early morning arranging everything waiting for customers to buy.

The second picture — I smelled that one before I saw it.

If you have ever been near a kpomo seller in an open market you already know what I mean. That smoky smell just travels. I turned around and there it was pieces of smoked cow skin laid out on a clean white cloth. Simple as that. But something about the way it was presented made me stop and photograph it. Growing up kpomo in the soup meant it was a good Sunday. It meant someone put in effort. So for me this picture is not really about the food itself it is about everything that food carries with it.

And the last picture — that is me.

I am not going to pretend I looked cool. My shirt was inside out I had a market glove on and I just stretched my hand out and took the shot. Behind me you can see the plantain stall I was standing at green bananas yam tubers on the ground the usual market arrangement.

I took that selfie because anytime I checked the photo in my phone I just want to remember that I was actually there. Not just as someone passing through but as someone who was paying attention. The market felt alive that morning and I was part of it even for just a little while.

These three pictures together mean a lot to me. They are nothing fancy. But they are real. And sometimes real is enough.
