SLC31-W5 || Our Surroundings A Series of Real Life Experiences ; Sea, River & Ponds
Steemian Friends,
One of the unique signs of the natural beauty of Bangladesh is the Meghna River. Especially in the Sonargaon section, the beauty of this river becomes even deeper and more enchanting. When I first went to the banks of this river, it seemed as if nature had brought all its beauty in one place. The vast water of the river, the light breeze, the movement of boats, and the calls of birds all create a wonderful atmosphere in the place. I travel on the Meghna River every week from the capital, Dhaka, to my hometown. It originates from the city of Assam in India and merges into the Bay of Bengal through Bangladesh. It is the largest and deepest river in our country.

Sonargaon is a historical region of Bangladesh. It was once the capital of Bengal. The Meghna River flows alongside that heritage. The river is not just a waterway, but an important part of the life, culture, and economy of the people here. Every day, numerous fishermen go to this river to fish. Some make a living by transporting goods by boat. The water of the river is also very beneficial for local farmers. Paddy, vegetables, and various crops grow well in the land around this river. I took a bus from my home in Comilla to Sonargaon bus station and took a few pictures from the top of the Meghna Bridge. Since there are numerous factories on both sides of the Meghna River, large ships anchor in the river.

I took this photo from the Meghna Bridge.
The most attractive aspect of the Sonargaon section of the Meghna River is its calm and serene environment. When you stand on the riverbank in the morning, you can see the sunlight slowly falling on the water and shimmering. Small boats float in the distance. The songs of the boatmen float in the air. It seems as if nature itself is singing. The river also takes on a different appearance in the afternoon. When the sun sets, a reddish glow spreads in the sky, and that color is reflected in the water of the river, creating a wonderful scene. Tourists enjoy watching the sunset while standing on the Meghna Bridge and the riverbank.

Mills built on the banks of the Meghna River
During the rainy season, the Meghna River takes on a larger form. Then the water in the river increases a lot, and the current also increases. Both banks of the river are filled with greenery. Many people come for boat trips during this time. Especially when you go on a river cruise with family or friends, it makes you feel very good. When you go to the middle of the river and see only water and water around you, it seems like the world is very calm and vast. Fishermen set out on the river with trawlers to catch fish. The people around earn their living by catching hilsa and other fish in the vast river. While I stand on the river and take pictures, several large cement factories have been built, which can be seen in the pictures and my video records.

Another important aspect of the river is its tourism potential. Many people come here to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Especially in winter, there is a lot of crowd on the river bank to have picnics. Some take pictures, some ride boats, and some sit on the riverbank and enjoy the natural scenery. The feeling of sitting next to the river and enjoying the cool breeze is truly extraordinary. A large part of our country's economy is based on the factories built on the banks of the river. Numerous people earn their living by working in these factories.

However, this beautiful river is facing some problems today. The river is being polluted in different places. Many people are destroying the environment by dumping garbage in the river. Especially, the waste material from factories in the capital, Dhaka, pollutes the river. Besides, many people are also affected due to river erosion. Therefore, we should protect the river and maintain its beauty. If the river is kept clean, future generations will also be able to enjoy this natural beauty.
