Tech Blog #265 | Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max: One of the Best Camera Flagships Most People Will Never Own

in Steem Sri Lankalast month

The Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max feels like Huawei's strongest flagship in years. While the company has faced many challenges outside China, it continues to push #smartphone camera technology further than almost every other brand. This year, #Huawei combines a premium design, flagship hardware, a massive battery, and one of the most advanced camera systems available. With its Kirin 9030S chipset, a powerful XMAGE camera system, a stunning LTPO OLED display, and ultra-fast charging, the Pura 90s Pro Max is clearly built for users who care about photography above everything else.

However, this phone also carries a reality that has followed Huawei for several years. Even though the hardware is among the best in the industry, many people simply cannot buy one because of its limited availability in many markets. On top of that, the ongoing US restrictions mean Huawei phones still ship without native Google Mobile Services, making them a difficult choice for many users outside China.

The design feels every bit like a premium flagship. Huawei uses an aluminum frame with durable Kunlun Glass protection, giving the phone a solid and luxurious feel. The large triangular camera module immediately stands out and clearly shows that photography is the main focus of this device. At around 230g, the phone is heavier than many competitors, but the weight is understandable considering the large camera sensors and battery inside. Huawei also includes IP68 and IP69 water and dust resistance, making it one of the most durable flagship smartphones currently available.

The display is another major highlight. Huawei includes a large 6.9-inch LTPO OLED panel with a 1.5K resolution and an adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz. The screen looks incredibly sharp, colors are vibrant without looking oversaturated, and scrolling feels extremely smooth. HDR content looks excellent, while outdoor visibility is also impressive thanks to the bright OLED panel. Huawei also continues using high-frequency PWM dimming, making the display more comfortable for users who are sensitive to screen flickering.

Performance is exactly what you expect from Huawei's latest flagship. The #Kirin 9030S processor is paired with fast LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, delivering flagship-level performance in everyday use. Apps open instantly, multitasking feels effortless, and demanding games run smoothly. Huawei has also improved AI processing and system optimization, making the entire interface feel fast and responsive. While benchmark scores may still fall slightly behind the latest Snapdragon flagship chips, the difference is very difficult to notice during normal daily use.

The camera system is where the Pura 90s Pro Max truly separates itself from almost every other smartphone. Huawei includes a 50MP main camera with a variable aperture, a high-resolution ultrawide camera, and an upgraded 200MP periscope telephoto camera with a much larger sensor than most competitors. The results are simply outstanding. Daylight photos are packed with detail, colors look natural, and dynamic range is excellent. Portrait photography is among the best available on any smartphone, while the periscope camera delivers exceptional zoom quality without losing too much detail. Low-light performance is equally impressive thanks to Huawei's large sensors and advanced XMAGE image processing. Unlike some brands that produce heavily processed images, Huawei continues to deliver photos that look more realistic while still maintaining excellent contrast and detail. It is easily one of the strongest camera systems available today.

Battery life is another major strength. The large 6000mAh battery easily lasts a full day even with heavy usage, while lighter users may comfortably reach two days on a single charge. Huawei also includes 100W wired charging and 80W wireless charging, allowing the battery to recharge extremely quickly. Reverse wired and reverse wireless charging are also supported, making the phone useful for charging accessories or even another smartphone. Huawei continues to compete with the fastest charging brands in the industry.

On the software side, the Pura 90s Pro Max runs #HarmonyOS in China and EMUI 16 in global markets. The software feels polished, responsive, and includes many useful AI-powered features for photography, productivity, and multitasking. Huawei has also continued improving its AppGallery ecosystem and its own Huawei Mobile Services.

Unfortunately, this is also where the phone faces its biggest challenge. Because of the ongoing US trade restrictions, the Pura 90s Pro Max does not include native Google Mobile Services. Although many popular apps are now available through AppGallery or third-party solutions, the experience still is not as seamless as using a Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, or OnePlus device. For users who depend heavily on Google Maps, Google Drive, Gmail, Google Pay, or other Google services, this remains an important limitation.

There are still a few drawbacks:

  • Native Google Mobile Services are still unavailable.
  • Limited global availability makes the phone difficult to purchase in many countries.
  • Premium pricing puts it among the most expensive flagship smartphones.
  • At around 230g, the phone feels heavier than many competitors.
  • The Kirin chipset still trails the latest Snapdragon processors in some benchmark tests.

The Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max feels like Huawei returning to what it does best. It delivers one of the best smartphone camera systems available today while also offering a premium design, a beautiful display, excellent battery life, and flagship-level performance. From a hardware perspective, it easily competes with the very best smartphones from Samsung, Apple, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Oppo.

However, the biggest challenge is no longer the hardware. Because of the ongoing US restrictions, Huawei phones remain difficult to recommend to everyone. Limited availability means many people simply cannot buy this phone even if they want to, and the lack of native Google services will still be a dealbreaker for many users outside China. These are limitations that have nothing to do with the quality of the device itself, but they have a major impact on the overall ownership experience.

If you want a flagship smartphone that focuses on photography, premium hardware, and fast charging, the Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max is an excellent choice and easily one of the best camera phones available today. But if you want a phone that is easier to purchase worldwide, fully supports Google's ecosystem, and offers a more convenient experience from the moment you switch it on, competitors from Samsung, Google, Apple, Vivo, or Xiaomi will be the more practical choice.
