My Community, My Story

In the busy city, our morning starts with some form of transportation, and at the end of the day, we return home along the same route, carrying accumulated fatigue. For me, transportation is not just about cars or roads; it is a big part of our daily lives and struggles. I live in the ECB Chattar area adjacent to Dhaka Cantonment and Mirpur. In today's post, I am presenting to you the real picture of the transportation system here through the video I recorded.

Transportation in My Area: ECB Chattar

If you look at the video I recorded, you will see that the public bus service is the biggest source of transportation for the common people in our ECB Chattar area. In addition, for short-distance and emergency transportation, there are many CNG autorickshaws, Lagunas, rickshaws, and ride-sharing bikes operating 24 hours a day.

The scenes in the video clearly show how, along with buses, various small and large vehicles have created a lively bustle at the entire intersection at the same time.

• Main focal point: ECB Chattar Bus Stop.

• Landmark: The circular monument with an excavator/tank-shaped motif seen in the video is the main icon of the ECB premises.

• Exact address: Ward No. 15 of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Cantonment Police Station, Dhaka (Mirpur 12, intersection of Kalshi and Airport Roads).

Personally, I use the city bus (public bus) the most for work and regular commuting and sometimes ride-sharing bikes to save time. Also, for regular office commuting, I commute with my office colleague Sajedul Saheb on his bike, and I pay him a fixed amount every month.

• Comfort and security in office commuting: Saving time and physical fatigue is a big deal when going to the office every morning. Commuting on the same bike with Sajedul Saheb reduces daily stress a lot, and by sharing a fixed amount at the end of the month, it has become a very economical and convenient arrangement for both of us.

• Fare savings: There is no alternative to buses for general commuting. Buses like 'Prajapati' or 'Amim' seen in the video can go to far and wide parts of the city at a very low cost.

• Easy to find: You don't have to wait more than 2-3 minutes after standing at the ECB Chattar bus stop. Buses heading to Uttara, the airport, Kuril, or Mirpur keep coming.

• Bike ride experience: As the bike ride shown in the bike ride video shows, riding a bike along the wide roads and the green island in the middle is really a very enjoyable and time-saving solution.

I analyze the transportation system in our area based on the video footage and personal experience as follows:

• Affordable: In my opinion, it is quite pocket-friendly for the common man. You can easily travel to different areas in the vicinity by bus to Laguna for just 10 to 30 taka. And the cost of commuting to the office through bike sharing is also quite affordable.

• Safe: Since it is adjacent to the military area, the overall security system here is excellent. There is strict surveillance by law enforcement and traffic police. Moreover, there is a beautiful overbridge for pedestrians to cross safely. However, while boarding the bus, you have to keep your mobile and wallet safe from pickpockets due to the heavy crowd.

• Convenient: As seen in the scenes throughout the video, wherever you want to go, CNG, rickshaws, or buses are always ready. There is no shortage of vehicles in the traffic here.

1. Severe rush hour congestion and fear of mobile phone theft: With the incredible rush on this route during office hours, boarding a bus is a big battle. And pickpockets often take advantage of this rush to steal passengers' mobile phones. Unfortunately, this has happened to me in my own life too—I have had my own mobile phone stolen from a bus twice so far, which is very distressing and extremely annoying.

2. Lack of passenger shelters: People are seen standing on the side of the road in the video. Since there is no specific modern passenger shelter, bus passengers have to suffer a lot in the scorching sun or sudden rain.

3. Bus competition and reckless stops: Many times, buses do not stop at designated places and drop passengers in the middle of the road or recklessly, which blocks the movement of other vehicles and poses a risk to bikes or other small vehicles.

4. Ignorance while crossing the road: Despite the existence of an overbridge, some pedestrians are seen unconsciously crossing the road by running under it, taking risks.

Strengthening security and CCTV at bus stops: Adequate plainclothes police or CCTV cameras should be provided at bus stops to prevent mobile theft and pickpocketing.

Modern passenger shelter: Construction of modern passenger shelters with specific seating facilities at bus stops to protect from sun and rain.

Bus bay: Creating separate lanes or specific stopping areas for buses will reduce traffic jams on main roads.

Maintaining discipline: Increasing the tendency of both pedestrians and drivers to obey traffic laws.

If this is your first time visiting our ECB premises, I would like to give you a few small suggestions based on the real scene in the video and my experience:

1. Keep valuables safe: Keep your mobile and wallet in your book pocket or bag. Since I have had the bitter experience of losing my phone twice, I have a special suggestion for you—do not keep your phone in your back pocket or loose during the rush to get on the bus. If you have a bag, bring it in front of your chest and hold it tightly.

2. Use the footover bridge: Use the blue-and-white modern footover bridge seen in the video while crossing the road. It is not safe to cross the road under any circumstances.

3. Confirm the fare in advance: Confirm the fare with the driver before boarding the rickshaws or CNGs seen in the video.

4. Peak hour pressure: There is a lot of pressure from 8:30 am to 10:00 am and from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, so avoid these times if possible.
