in Steem Sri Lanka10 days ago (edited)

Greetings everyone! This Mohammad Sumon! from #Bangladesh

Hello everyone! I hope you all are doing well by the grace of the Almighty.

Today, I am very excited to share my entry for the Contest. A special thanks to my friend@josepha, for hosting such an engaging competition.

Spreading positivity and creativity through my words.

My Community, My Story

Today I would like to share something about a very well-known and important profession in our area—tailoring. For this week's contest, I have chosen a small local business, Hasan Ladies and Gents Tailors, which, to me, is an integral part of the daily lives of the people of our area.

In my opinion, sewing or tailoring is not just a commercial profession; behind it lies immense patience, perfect calculation, and love for people. Thousands of ready-made clothes can indeed be bought in the market, but the peace of having clothes made to your own liking and in a comfortable size is possible for me only with the touch of love of a skilled tailor.

1. What is your community's name, and where is it located? Tell us and share the Google Maps, Steematlas, and Google Plus location.

My community is Manikdi, a vibrant area under Dhaka Cantonment Police Station in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

  • Name of community and area: Manikdi Amtala, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

  • Name of organization: Hassan Ladies and Gents Tailors

  • Name of owner: Mohammad Hassan

2. In your community, what is the most common occupation, and why is the occupation important to your community?

In my opinion, the importance of this profession in our community is

1. Perfect fit and comfort: Not everyone's body shape is the same. I think that local tailors make clothes to the perfect size to restore the comfort that is lacking in ready-made clothes.

2. Adding to the festive atmosphere: During Eid or any religious and social festival, tailors are under a lot of work pressure. In my opinion, the festive atmosphere and joy of new clothes for the people of the entire area start from these tailors.

3. Financial savings: In addition to making new clothes, this shop saves a lot of money for the people of our area by fitting or sizing old clothes and making them reusable.

A wonderful aspect I saw (prayer breaks):

One thing that touched my heart when I went to the shop was their discipline. No matter how stressful the work is, when it is time for prayers, he stops working, takes a break, and prays. In my opinion, besides being a professional craftsman, his religious values and honesty have set him apart from everyone else.

3. What tools or skills are used in the occupation that people in your community do?
Required equipment used:

Professional sewing machine (Jack Sewing Machine): Used to sew every part of the fabric perfectly.

Overlock sewing machine: It is used to prevent the threads on the inner edge of the fabric from unraveling and to get a beautiful overlock finish.

Cutting table, measuring tape, and scale: Gauze tape, tailor's chalk, heavy scissors, and a wooden curved scale are arranged on the large cutting table.

Colored thread basket: A basket for organizing reels of different colors of thread according to the convenience of the work.

Iron: To straighten the folds of the fabric after sewing and give a professional finish.

The proprietor of Hasan Ladies and Gents Tailors is Mohammad Hasan, who is the younger brother of a close friend of mine

Required skills:
  • A correct understanding of body measurements and the ability to cut according to the type of fabric.

  • The ability to understand current fashion trends and customer preferences.

  • Great patience and fine vision to work attentively for a long time.

4. Tell us the challenges people are facing in this occupation

Tailors face several challenges every day. Based on my observations and discussions with Hasan, I have highlighted the main challenges below:

1. Shop relocation and sustainability issues: Hasan recently shifted his shop to Lal Mia Complex, Manikadi Amtala. Due to shifting to a new location, the initial challenge is to decorate, tidy up, and get a new identity for the shop.

2. Seasonal income fluctuations: There is extra work pressure during Eid, but during other normal times of the year, work and income decrease slightly.

3. Rising prices of raw materials and electricity: As the cost of yarn, buttons, buckles, and electricity bills increase day by day, it becomes difficult to maintain the cost of sewing.

4. Physical exertion and health risks: Sitting in the same place for long periods of time and sewing with a bent neck and back leads to health problems for the craftsmen.

5. Share with us how this occupation supports the local economy and families in your community.

In my opinion, local tailors do not just sew clothes but also play a major role in keeping the economic wheels of our community moving:

1. Family livelihood: The artisans' families run based on this business, and it is possible to meet the expenses of their children's education and household expenses.

2. Local shopping and connections: Local people do not have to go far to meet their small clothing needs. As a result, the community's money circulates within the community, which strengthens the local economy.

3. Employment creation: When the business grows, employment opportunities are created for the unemployed youth of the area by hiring new craftsmen or assistants.

My personal and human experience:

Stitched dresses hanging on display for delivery

Recently, my wife had a dress sewn. I went to the new shop in Manikadi Amtala with my younger daughter to take delivery of that ready-made dress. Despite the various problems of changing places, Hasan welcomed us with a very sweet and friendly smile as before and handed over the perfectly sewn dress to me on time.

This small incident of going with my daughter to understand my wife's dress was a great joy for me. Hasan has become a beloved craftsman in our family because of such a friendly attitude, sincerity, and perfect work.

Review:
Tailors are great people in every society. The second question required participants to introduce an occupation and its importance in their community, which your response isn't in line with what is asked and should be.
