Amidst the growing popularity of the secondhand clothing trade, or thrifting, not all business activities are without problems. On a corner of Jalan Tgk. Hasan Krueng Kale, Gampong Peunayong, Banda Aceh, a thrifting stall has drawn complaints from residents whose homes are located directly near the location of the trading activity.

Every day, the thrift of shoppers coming to hunt for quality used clothing is a common sight. However, for the homeowners directly in front of the stall, the bustle has slowly become a source of discomfort. The space in front of their homes, which should be a private area, feels increasingly cramped by the trading activity that takes place from morning to evening.
Initially, attempts were made to resolve the issue amicably.

The homeowners repeatedly asked the vendors to move their stalls to a more suitable location. The simple hope was that their businesses would continue operating without disrupting the comfort of local residents. However, these efforts proved unsuccessful.

"We respect vendors who seek a living, but they should not disturb the peace of others," said a Banda Aceh resident.

When communication failed, a report was finally submitted to the Banda Aceh City Public Order and Public Order Agency (Satpol PP-WH).

Following up on the complaint, Satpol PP-WH officers went directly to the location. No repressive action was taken. Using a persuasive approach, officers gave verbal warnings and educated stall owners on the importance of using public space wisely and maintaining order in the neighborhood.

The Head of the Banda Aceh Satpol PP-WH, Muhammad Rizal, stated that his office is obligated to respond to every public report related to disturbances to public order and the safety of residents.

According to Rizal, using areas in front of residents' homes for trading without considering the comfort of the neighborhood has the potential to create social tension. Therefore, dialogue and a humane approach are the first choices before other measures are taken.

This phenomenon actually illustrates the challenges that often arise in urban areas. On the one hand, people need space to do business and earn a living. On the other hand, residents' rights to enjoy a safe, orderly, and comfortable environment must also be respected.

In a constantly developing city like Banda Aceh, maintaining a balance between economic activity and social order is crucial. This is because public space belongs not only to businesses but also to all the residents who live and interact within it.

By prioritizing dialogue, the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP-WH) hopes that similar issues can be resolved without causing prolonged conflict. Ultimately, a comfortable city is built not only on regulations, but also on a conscious commitment to respecting each other's rights and living space.[]
