Integrity is built not inherited. I say this because, someone from an honest family may grow up to be a corrupt individual if they never build it.

Integrity is a gradual process. It is earn with time of being consistent with honesty and it attracts being reliability and trustworthiness to others.

What it means to be "true to yourself?"

When you know what you can do and what you cannot do: you respect your limit and be realistic. You don't go pass your capability or pretend to be something you're not.

You don't do nothing to impress others and might suffer the pains that comes with it in secret.
For example: I see my mates wearing the latest designer's clothes. I could get it but that means I'll go hungry for days or I may go into an unnecessary debt.

Does it makes sense to say that I'm being true to myself?

No o! Integrity needs discipline and contentment too.

Why it is important for people to keep their promises

Below are the few points I have to why it is important for people to keep to their promises:

  • They will be trusted. People can rely on them easily because they know they won't let them down

  • Promises is tied to honesty, which is one of the key part of integrity. Being known for honesty strengthen relationships.

  • Keeping to promises shows being accountable to what you said. It set a fine example for others to follow and opens the door to opportunities.

The differences between being honest and being nice?

Being honest is telling the truth even when it is not easy to do so. Honest people present the facts to you the way they are, not beating about he bush.

On the other hand, being nice means one is kind and consider others feelings resulting in softening the truth. Unlike honesty, which focuses on presenting the truth without considering your feelings.

The differences is that honesty focus on truth, while being nice focuses on feelings. In integrity, sometimes these two may work together; telling the truth with respect and care.

Why won't you lie for a friend to get out of trouble?

The fact is, one lie could bring another and, what if the truth surfaces?
That could cost my integrity, something that I spent years to build.
The fact is, he got to bear the consequences of his action.

My Conclusion

Integrity is built not inherited.
Keeping to promises brings about being trusted and shows consistency and accountability. Sometimes honesty and niceness works together to get a favourable result of integrity. Lastly, instead of doing what might cost my integrity, like lying for my friend to get out of trouble. I could help him bear the consequences of his action.
