Being strong is a wonderful thing. It is the ability to be strong in times of fear, pain, stress and hardship. It isn't always physical. At times, the strongest are the ones who don't quit when things get tough. Courage, resilience and growth are themes that come out in The Karate Kid.

The film is about a young boy, Daniel LaRusso. Daniel and his mother moved to a new town. He had no friends, no family and he was feeling lonely. He quickly became the prey of some karate experts who enjoyed picking on others. Daniel was feeling lonely, helpless and defeated. I felt for him, because there are times in our lives when we feel lonely and weak.

For me, the most intriguing inner battle was Daniel's struggle with fear and doubt. He was not just battling enemies from the outside, but also the enemy from within. I think this is the case in our lives too. We must not only fight the enemies on the outside, but also the doubts within ourselves. Daniel wanted to fight, but didn't believe in himself. He wanted harmony, but he kept getting into fights. This conflict added depth to the film.

The other character of inner strength was Mr Miyagi. He was peaceful, sensible and patient. Although he had been hurt in the past, he didn't let it make him angry. He used wisdom and patience to teach Daniel. Mr. Miyagi proved that strength is not always violent. Sometimes strength is peaceful and wise. I loved the way he was able to deal with problems without excessive force.

My favourite display of true strength was when Daniel decided to go along with the training, even when he didn't understand it. Mr. Miyagi wanted him to do the most basic tasks such as washing cars, sanding the floor, painting the fence and painting the house. Danie was upset because he felt he was being tricked. He wanted to learn karate, but was instead cleaning.

There is a powerful message in this section of the film. Strength can be developed in confusing, painful, and mundane times. Many give up if they don't understand the process. Daniel wanted to learn quickly, but Mr. Miyagi was teaching him discipline, patience and muscle memory. Eventually, Daniel learns that all the chores were really training him for karate defence moves. This was powerful because you learn nothing is wasted if you have a good teacher.

Another powerful moment of strength was in the tournament. Daniel was hurt and in pain, but he kept going. He knew he was not likely to win, but he did not give up. Courage is not the absence of fear or pain. Courage means taking a stand, even when you're afraid. Daniel was determined for the final round. Even though his body was weak, his mind had become strong.

The crane kick moment was more than a victory. To me, it was everything Daniel had been taught. All of the elements of balance, patience, confidence, discipline and faith in himself were combined. When he kicked, and won, he didn't just defeat his opponent. He had fought fear, weakness, and doubt.

At the end, Daniel was transformed. He started off timid, defensive and easily flustered. He was emotional and would sometimes react impulsively. But then, he was peaceful, determined, disciplined and self-assured. He was able to control himself, rather than being controlled by anger. That is true growth.

Mr. Miyagi also taught Daniel about life. Daniel requested karate, but he learned from the wise. He learned humility, patience, respect and determination. These skills can be applied in life. We all have our own life battles - money problems, being rejected, failing, being disappointed, being afraid. We must be strong to win, just like Daniel.

My favourite part about this movie is that I am reminded that no one starts out strong. We all start off weak, lost and scared. However, if you are persistent, have the right mentors and keep doing it, you will improve. I relate to Daniel at times because there are times in my life when it isn't fair and I question if I am capable. The Karate Kid teaches me to never give up.

In summary, The Karate Kid is a movie about inner strength. It exemplifies bravery in the midst of fear, determination in the face of adversity, and learning through discipline. The story with Daniel shows that inner strength is not easily achieved. It is earned through effort, determination and hard work. This film is uplifting and timeless because it shows that you can overcome any difficulty and grow stronger.
