FYB Sign-Out Day — The Last Exam, The Signatures, The Party and What My Dad Said After
The Outfit |
|---|
Sign-Out Day — 10th July 2026
White long sleeve corporate shirt, Asake jeans, Timberland boots and silver necklace.
The Morning |
|---|
Sign-Out Day was different from every other day of FYB Week. The energy was different. The air felt different.
I got to school earlier than I had gone any other day since the semester started. Exams at 8am. I entered the hall on time, wrote my best and by a little past 9 I walked out.
And when I came out I already saw it happening. People signing on each other's white clothes everywhere across campus. As I came out people rushed to me and started signing my shirt. People were smiling and joyful everywhere. I felt among. I felt part of something.
But then something shifted.
The Moment That Hit Differently |
|---|
I started looking around and the scene changed in meaning for me. Here, someone crying joyful tears while a loved one handed them a gift. There, a parent with pride all over their face, dancing and praising their child. I looked from one side to the other and something quietly settled over me.
My parents were not there!
They are in Lagos. The distance, the cost, the logistics. I understood all of that. I told myself all of that. But standing there in the middle of all that celebration, not knowing where to put myself, I felt something I still cannot find the exact word for.
I did not let myself sink into it. I ate food from three different friends whose parents had brought food to campus. I was filled. Then I went home alone.
What My Dad Said |
|---|
In my room I sat with my thoughts for a while. Then my dad called.
What he said to me, the way he said it, was that I have been trained and now I am on my own. That I should start putting my plans into action. That there is nothing to come back home to wait for. That this is my time.
I heard him. I really heard him.
My dad is the first graduate from his side of the family. First to build a house, first to own a car. I am the second graduate, soon to be. We are early in what this family is becoming. I am not starting from nothing. I am continuing something.
The After Party |
|---|
That evening I did not want to stay home sitting with heavy thoughts. So I went for the Sign-Out after party.
This was only my second time ever entering a club. The first was my matriculation after party years ago. And I danced. I danced steps I did not even know I had in me, like they had been hiding somewhere waiting for that night. I danced with some girls too. I greeted people, laughed, and when I felt it was time I went home.
I got home still feeling light-headed but aware and conscious of everything. I slept well and sound.
What I Am Carrying Out Of This |
|---|
FYB Week is sold to you as a celebration. And it is. But Sign-Out Day was also a mirror.
It showed me who showed up and who did not. It showed me dance steps I did not know I had. It showed me that I can stand alone in a crowd and still be okay.
My dad's words keep coming back to me. I am on my own now. My life has started.
And I am not afraid of that. If anything I think this is exactly the kind of moment that builds the drive that changes everything.
The outfit was good. The memories were real. But what I am carrying out of Sign-Out Day is not a photo. It is clarity.
To every final year student reading this how did your own Sign-Out Day feel? Did it hit you differently than you expected?
