The title may have gotten you in a way, but this movie appeals to both men and women who are desperate to marry. Some people say men only need money and then they'll marry, while women are the only ones who depend on a man to ask them out first before they can marry. If they don't see a suitor, they'll remain single, which increases their desperation to marry before menopause.

The same as how some women are picky, men too are picky, which keeps them waiting for too long when pressure is coming from parents, friends who have married at a young age, and others. Let me tell you how Abidemi Last to Marry relates to me. Abidemi in this movie is a lady, and I'm a man, but there's a serious connection between what happened to her and what is happening to me.

Watch a movie

The title of the movie is Last to Marry, and the best quote I get to hear in the movie is that "You don't need a ring on your finger to make your life count." This movie portrays a young lady in her 30s who's beautiful and attractive but is unmarried because of so many reasons, which, if you watch the movie, you'll get to know all of. Pressure from family members for her to look for a man if a man isn't looking for her was there.

Singleness wasn't an option to her in the movie because most of her friends were married, and she was just so scared of her aging, which brought about the desperation to marry anyone she saw, even though the person was not her type of person or someone who didn't follow her Christian dreams but loved her and had money to take care of her.

At some point, she met suitors and even went into a relationship with one, which didn't help turn out well. Her desperation to get married made her think she can just manage him as long as they are married and she's wearing a ring on her finger. He was someone who was her spec but had anger issues.

Then another one wasn't her spec because he was a Muslim and had a wife already, but this person loved her so much. He even took care of her when she was ill, cooked for her, and treated her like a queen. He was also rich.

She was left to decide who to choose between the two because she never wants to be single forever. Who did her desperation to marry and not being the last to marry make her choose? Watch the movie using the link below and find out.

You'll also need to see the scenes where someone who wanted to engage her kept a ring on the table for her to wear. It was a difficult task getting the man of her dreams. But being last to marry when others are marrying wasn't her thing. Will she marry whoever she sees and marry him to avoid being mocked, or did she eventually see the man of her dreams?

Choose a character you strongly relate to.

The last to marry is not a fool. The character I strongly relate with is Abidemi, the protagonist in the movie. How do I relate to her? I'll describe scenes. In this part of Nigeria, parents pressure their children to marry. Can you imagine I told my parents I wouldn't marry but rather remain single, and they rebuked it for me?

They said they want a grandchild, and that's the same pressure Abidemi faced. She was pressured by her parents to not be picky and choose anyone and marry, irrespective of whether he was her type or not. Friends pressure her, which leads to her desperation. Friends and family pressure me to get married because I have the money.

They aren't interested in who I get to marry. All they want to know is that I'm married. They don't know that the consequences of rushing to marry are for me to face alone and not even in their list of problems. Friends tell me I'm aging and that I should marry fast because the money is there. They see singleness as not an option for me because it may get to a point I may just have to choose that option instead of settling for someone I'll later regret marrying, and marriage is a lifelong bond.

Last year, three of my friends got married, and this year, they will get married at a young age, but I'm gradually advancing in age, but I haven't seen someone for me, and I just can't pick anyone just because there's a pressure to marry.

Mention the similarities between you and that character? (Struggles and strength)

The similarities between me and the character would be segmented into two: weakness or struggles and strength.

Struggles

  • Both of us are pressured by family and friends to marry, irrespective of who it is. At least there's a ring on our fingers. And this pressure makes us worry and give in to thoughts.
  • Both of us see singleness as not being an option. The goal is to marry and to marry early, not when everyone has married and we're still looking for the man of our dreams.
  • Both of us have been in a failed relationship because of wanting to do what others are doing.
  • Staying alone is what we find to be our weakness. We need a partner.

Strength

  • Both of us now see singleness as an option, even for men like me. It's better to be single than to marry someone with problems, which would be with us for a lifetime.
  • Both of us have the life we expect from another person because you can't be expecting a God-fearing person when you're not God-fearing. The ability to stick to our stance on some expectations of a marriage mate is our strength because we'll not be used or cajoled into marrying because someone is loving, beautiful, or rich.
  • Both of us believe that God has a plan for our lives and we can't compromise all our values just to marry. And that's our strength.
  • She stood up against two men who she was in a relationship with. Even with her desperation, she didn't give in because marriage is a long-term commitment. Personally, I've let go of someone I was in a relationship with who doesn't blend with my Christian values even though the love is there.
What lessons have you learned from that character?

I've learned a lot from the decisions Abidemi later made concerning her thoughts of being the last to marry.

  • I don't need a ring on my finger to prove that I'm a man or to fulfill my purpose in life.
  • I don't need to be pressured by my family and friends to marry because I want to please them. Marriage is a lifelong run, and I'm the only person to face the repercussions of whatever problems happen in my marriage.
  • Last to marry is not a fool. Because I've seen my friends rush into marrying a fine lady who has front and back, I rush to impress others, not minding core values in this woman I choose to be my wife.
  • It's better to be single than to marry someone I'll later wish I never married to.
  • I shouldn't allow my desire to marry to turn into desperation, and I shouldn't displease myself to impress anyone.

These are the few lessons learned from this character. The movie ends well and is a lesson to both men and women, especially ladies. If you've not watched this movie, you're missing out. Try it out.
