Business O’clock”
What business are you currently doing, or what business would you like to start? Explain why you chose it.
I envision a food commodity trading business, particularly focusing on buying essentials like rice, soyabeans, and garri in bulk and then selling them retail. Food is a basic need for all humans and demand is always constant and recession-proof. By bulk purchasing non-perishable food staples directly from farmers or wholesale suppliers, I can reduce the cost of goods sold. Selling them to consumers in smaller, accessible units will allow me to generate a stable and healthy profit.
If you were given $200-$500 today to invest in a business, how would you use the money? Give a simple business plan.
- Investment Breakdown ($300 Example):
Stock ( $220): Buy half bags and full bags of rice, garri, and soybeans.
Logistics & packaging ( $50): Container measures, packaging material, and transport to the immediate vicinity.
Backup & contingency fund ( $30)*: Funds to account for shifts in wholesale prices or unforeseen costs.
Target Market: The community, local market vendors, and individuals that crave quick access to essential food supplies.
Sales Method:Sell small amounts to local households or businesses using local measures, (e.g. Paint buckets or in kilograms, depending on local norms) and with reasonable markup prices.
Strategy for growth: I will invest 80% of profit margin into buying a higher quantity to obtain a greater discount at each purchase.
The Top three qualities for a successful business entrepreneur.
Financial self-restraint: By meticulously regulating cash flow, one ensures readily available working capital for replenishment. Otherwise, liquid capital gets squandered for unbudgeted spending.
Market knowledge and adaptability: The conditions of sales, local wants, trends, and locational benefits are always shifting and a business person should be equipped to adjust his sales to match local dynamics.
Tenacity: The tenacity to survive supply disruptions, low profits and losses will enable a business person to bounce back from any error in judgement while expanding business processes.
Have you ever experienced a business failure or major challenge? If yes, what lesson did you learn from it?
Yes I have encountered substantial difficulties within previous business attempts and these lessons have been indispensable to my approach to future entrepreneurship:
Choice of a location: A location with little or no activity will severely limit sales and profit. Business success and profitability depends heavily on locational factors and footfalls. A good product alone is not enough without an appropriate marketplace.
Cash flow and business management: Sales and credit should not be combined; this directly leads to a liquidity shortage, an inability to restock inventory and consequently "bad debts." Businesses should strictly adhere to cash-and-carry.
