What is first aid, and why is it important?

The first aid is the immediate treatment, which could be provided to a person who has experienced an accident or suddenly fell ill before the professional medical help. It involves straightforward procedures, wound care, hemorrhage, burns, or a choking victim. The significance of first aid isp also connected with the fact that it may possibly save life, not to mention that it could prevent the further loss of wounds and the only decrease of the time of recovery.

The first aid will save the life of a person who would otherwise have been dead before the medical personnel arrived or the ambulance. It also makes the people safer and more assured in the event of any emergency whether at home, schools, in the city etc. The first aid education makes people responsible and conscious and they have an opportunity to help other people in the emergency situation and, most probably, to make a significant change.

Which simple first aid techniques do you know or have learned? When should they be used?

Some of the first aid skills that I have obtained are simple and can be applied in real life. Simple wound management is applied to avoid infection like washing a cut and wrapping it with a bandage. In case of bleeding a wound, it has to be pressed so that it does not lose a large amount of blood until medical attention is received. Minor injuries or sprains are treated through RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) because they help to reduce swellings and pains.

CPR is conducted in case of the emergency because the patient is not breathing or has no pulse in order to help the blood flow to the vital organs. Cool water must be used to treat the burns and alleviate pain and burns.

What are the step-by-step procedures for applying the first aid techniques you have mentioned above? State them.

The simple method of wound management is hand washing, cleansing of the wound using clean water, bleeding, antiseptic, and wrapping the clean bandage around the wound. To curb bleeding the person should sit or lie on a clean cloth held upside the wound putting pressure and adding more cloth in case of necessity. RICE technique of sprains proposes the remaining part of injury, ice of an injured region at least 15-20 minutes, compressing of an injured region, and raising of a limb.

CPR is administered to someone that is not awake enough, call ambulance, and it should have regular chest compressions. In case of lesser burn, the cold running water, not ice and creams loosely cover it and rush to see the doctor as per possible severe burns or when blisters form or the pain multiplies.

Have you ever used first aid to help yourself or someone else? Share your experience?

Yes, I have applied first aid to serve a fellow at school. I had a classmate who was also involved in one of the sporting events when he fell forward and injured his knee. It was a slight hemorrhage and they had been frightened and maimed. I managed to control myself and sit them down. I sponged the wound with water and added some pressure in it with a clean cloth until it stopped bleeding.

Then I was assisting with an antiseptic and bandage courtesy of school first aid kit. I also reported to a teacher to ensure that he or she checked the student. This experience not only convinced me of the significance of the first aid knowledge, but also gave me the idea of how such knowledge would be valuable to a person to be safe and relaxed during the crisis.

Why do you think everyone should learn basic first aid skills?

Basic first aids should be taught to everyone since the emergencies will occur at any point and at any time. First aid knowledge makes people react well and take the necessary action before the arrival of the professional assistance. Even such basic skills as bleeding cessation, burn treatment or choking assistance can ensure that injuries do not get more serious. The knowledge of first aid makes someone more confident and not panicked in stressful circumstances. It promotes accountability and concern towards others, particularly the family members, schoolmates and colleagues. First aid would help to save lives, decrease the period of recovery, and have safer communities. As many of us get trained, then there is always help around, thus making the society more robust, ready and more humane in general, to all, at all situations, at all places, on all days.
