Write on a movie that has never left your mind because it impacted you.

Bombay (Tamil)

'Bombay'—a important film for Tamil cinema and Indian films as a whole—is one of the top-grossing Tamil films ever. At the time A.R. Rahmans music for the film is considered one of the best Indian soundtracks of all time.

The film is also very controversial because it shows a Islam woman and a Hindu man in a relationship. This caused problems, in Singapore and Malaysia where the film was banned soon as it came out. Things got even worse when someone threw two bombs at the home of Director Mani Ratnam hurting him badly enough to need hospital treatment.

The movie Bombay is really something. It shows how talented the people who made it are. The movie is a bold work that express feeling aboyt two relegion. It does a job of showing what movies are supposed to do for a society. The movie Bombay is very good, at keeping people interested.

Which scene still stays in your mind? Why?

Mani Ratnam presents a multifaceted narrative landscape. Within a work replete with intense socio-political commentary regarding religious violence and inter-faith relations, elements of romance, drama, and even children's cinema are all executed with exceptional skill. These elements permeate every other aspect of the film. In this regard, the manner in which these diverse components—while simultaneously reflecting broader societal issues—create space for the analysis of every major character emerges as the film's most outstanding attribute. This stands as a testament to the brilliant direction Ratnam demonstrates here.

Furthermore, the way he infuses humor throughout the film, the musical sequences featuring Rahman's magnificent score—particularly the scene depicting sexual intimacy—integrate seamlessly into the narrative; equally remarkable is the manner in which he utilizes the children within these two distinct contexts. The messages conveyed through the children while lying in bed, the 'ploy' devised by the two protagonists—who, despite being raised in different faiths, grow up in harmony under the same roof—and the paths they choose to navigate during the riots are not only striking but also add both entertainment value and contextual depth to the film. Moreover, the performances Ratnam elicited from Master Harsha (Sumit) as Kabir and Master Hriday as Kamal are equally impressive.

What message did you carry forward?

The film truly shines when the riots begin—particularly during the second wave of unrest—at which point it transforms into a political thriller of sorts. The violence engulfing Bombay—which eventually draws in even friends and relatives—is depicted with remarkable intensity. Rajiv Menon’s cinematography, which initially captured breathtakingly beautiful visuals of the rural landscape, reaches its zenith here; the events are portrayed in an almost documentary-like style.

The same holds true for Suresh Urs’s editing, as he heightens the pacing of these sequences in a highly fitting manner. The film’s message regarding the evils of this senseless hatred—a phenomenon that, in reality, persists to this day—is underscored by the two interviews Shekhar conducts with the opposing leaders. While these interviews suggest that, with state complicity, Hindus act as aggressors and Muslims as victims, they also reveal that both factions remain poised to engage in violence, utterly indifferent to the consequences for the people and the city itself.

Although the highly impactful climax concludes in a manner designed to captivate the audience, the ultimate fate of the two children serves to lend even greater weight to this narrative approach.

Would you recommend this movie? Why?

In this film director Mani Ratnam gives us a story with sides that talks about issues like religious violence and how people of different faiths get along. It also has romance, drama and even parts that feel like a kids movie. All of these things are put together well. The first thing you notice is how the movie looks. Rahmans music really gets to you it is like the sound of the Arabian Sea. Rajiv Menons camera shows us everything. It shows us the things, like a strand of hair moving across someones forehead. It shows us the feelings in Shaila Banus eyes, the mole on Shekhars brow, how angry Nasser's how great Kitty is at acting. Ranked among Mani Ratnam's classic works, this film portrays both romance and politics.
